The physical effects are different but porn has a similar effect to cocaine with respect to dopamine release and long term depletion Also, the same parts of the brain are activated after watching porn or snorting lines of coke. Here’s some good vidoes on how porn affects the brain and how people get addicted and can beat addiction.

That second step has frequently been a stumbling block for me as well. ;)

I’ve gone a week so far (by coincidence not tied to this thread) because I thought it was time to give it a shot again and I’ve been in the midst of a generally successful self improvement phase. When I was younger I would sometimes stay up for hours into the night watching porn and jerking, not realizing at the time that there was anything really wrong with that other than lost sleep. I’ve been particularly fortunate in that my indulgences have led to quite a bit of wasted time but no major consequences.

I’m trying a different tactic this time around and holding off on deleting my collection but going completely cold turkey in hopes that once my brain has successfully re-wired itself I’ll be able to delete my collection without the usual relapse and rebuilding that accompanies an impulsive porn cleaning fest.

One of the worst parts for me is that I feel the last five years or so have been a new golden age for porn, and that if I quit watching than I’ll miss more good stuff. There’s a little voice in the back of my head that nags at me to just check up on new releases or developments since last week. “What’s the harm?”

Good thread and I totally agree with your thoughts.

I’m not religious or a feminazi, but I can attest that porn has had a negative affect on me. Not only sex drive, but general mood & productivity. If I’m feeling down, I can always feel good for hours at a time watching porn. I waste the day away, and then feel guilty for doing so, and feel even worse. It is addictive, and a crutch- similar to how I use alcohol at times. I’ve tried to stop quite a few times, but it’s tough.

If this thread could be turned into some kind of mini support group that would be cool, because I too would like to stop.

Watch responsibly.

I think we’re going to see a lot more of this issue in the next 5 years. I honestly believe porn abuse and addiction is an epidemic that the general public isn’t even aware of the scale of and hasn’t fully acknowledged yet.

I feel now that I can have a serious attempt to get rid of porn addiction. My action plan is as follows:

1. Absolutely no porn on my PC (no files, links) - accomplished

2. Resisting the temptation to follow such links on this Forum (or other forums) - started (in progress, I hope for indefinite time)

3. No more watching adult channels on TV - in progress

4. Cancelling subscription to adult channels - to be done

Thanks for the links, very helpful. That ‘s 7 days of no porn for me and I feel great. I noticed immediate progress in the social area. Yesterday I went out, play with friend and meet some people that I didn’t know before. It’ s like being someone else.
For the group I don’t have idea, but if You ever think about doing one count me in.
That only think I suggest that a group should be religion free (I think that ethics and moral norm should be disconnected by religion belief).

PS Marinera suggested the onanyst anonymous.maybe not the best name :)

Just a question for other guys that have tried to stop- have you found your libido goes down a bit after the first week? I’ll be extra horny for the first few days of abstaining, but after a week something clicks.

I think that in previous attempts this is what has led me into indulging. After a week or so, I’ll feel like my sex drive is low. To get it back up & remind myself of how hot women are, I’ll desperately want to use porn to feel really horny again.

Hopefully these are just “withdrawls” and this time I’ll get past that phase.

Boredom is also a killer. Such an easy way to pass the time if I cant sleep etc. Gotta stay strong

Good start. You might want to install a porn blocker to help with not following links. K9 is a good free one.

Sounds like you might be setting yourself up to fail. I really think you need to go cold turkey to kick porn. Just do it! Good luck! :-)

Yes definitely. I noticed that for about 2 weeks my libido was non existent. It slowly starts to come back but you have to stick with the abstinence. Cutting out all masturbation speeds up the reseting your brain process from what I’ve read. It can take 2-3 months, longer, in some really severe cases of porn addiction, to reset your brain.

You need to avoid these states at all costs when combatting any form of addiction. They act as triggers that cause you to relapse. You need to find healthy ways to avoid these states. Get out of the house and meet people, find a new hobby etc. For me it’s dance classes.

Yeah I’ve noticed my social anxiety shrinking and my confidence with people growing each day. It really does feel like you’re a different person. I can totally relate. Dopemine depletion can cause you to be antisocial. See the above link for more information.

This has nothing to do with (lack of) determination, but finance. Changing the subscription type before renewal date comes with an extra cost which I’d like to avoid. Not watching those channels is the real determination :) !

I think the answer depends on the concrete situation of each of us, how much sex we have with women, etc.

Being a little drunk doesn’t make it easier.

I’m a shift worker & student, whenever Ive been working nights and have to get back to normal sleeping patterns for study I’ll often drink to get to sleep. It makes using the computer and wandering onto porn very hard to stop.

I just went onto a nude chat site, but closed it off after about a minute before starting to get hard or jerk off. Can’t believe I lapsed already but at least I stopped …. this time anyway.

Btw good post- “Blast” is very true & I’ll keep it in mind.

Just curious with the part about cutting out masturbation. Is it really the orgasm/release that’s the problem, or even just the pre-climax part of masturbation?

Put another way, would edging and retaining (not ejaculating) be ok, or just as much part of the problem?

BigFatLuvRocket,

I have the same question. Will the brains reset be just as fast if one didn’t ejaculate when masturbating?
