Extenders and hanging setups are pretty interchangeable since they both serve the same function, so it is really a matter of preference.
Unless you are planning on using really heavy weights down the line, then you are probably going to want to use a vacuum hanger setup, since once you get the hang of them they are the most convenient and versatile. You can use them to attach to a hanging setup, most extenders and most ADS setups (All Day Stretch—in case you want to try lower tension and longer duration or follow your intense portion with an all day setup).
Compression hangers are way less comfortable and require some time to get accustomed for the tissues, but in the end can deal with a lot more weight without a risk of complications like blisters.
Some guys also have had success with noose extenders, but I don’t like those at all.
I recommend checking out the Total Man website. There is a great buying guide, lots of options for both hanging and extending, and even packages if you want to try a few different options. I find their vacuum setups, sleeves and accessories for hanging the overall best when considering price, quality and design. They have compression hanger options, too.
But there are lots of options of other manufacturers out there if you want to look around.
I don’t prefer the Total Man extender compared to some others, but it is more than serviceable. Some extenders use a spring or band force for elongation, some are set as bolt and nut and don’t have the spring/elastic component. So again, you kind of have to figure out what you prefer, as there are benefits and drawbacks to each.
In the end the equipment you buy (and use) is going to be based on personal preference, including whether you prefer hanging or extending. There are pluses and minuses to both and for a lot of guys it kind of requires some experimentation to figure out what you most prefer for most days. I myself have a couple of extenders, and a set up to hang straight down and also straight out using a pulley system under my desk, as well as a high-tension waist band setup that works as an elongation device—this one is great because I can be mobile while the setup is pretty stealth under my clothes. The elongation device I use that day tends to depend on what fits my day and interest so I like to have options.
Good luck and keep us posted.
