Hey guys and the much cherished gals,

There have been a lot of posts about drinking enough water. I totally agree. Most people walk around dehydrated for most of their lives and end up with health problems. (Arthritis, kidney stones, tendinitis, etc.) Like most things though people tend to over do it. (I can tell you guys are already rolling your eyes) Just hear me out. I learned through mountaineering that the best way to combat high altitude is to drink a lot of water. The danger of this is that you can wash away electrolytes in your system. I experienced this a few times after drinking a ton of water I bonked really bad and didn’t feel better until a buddy gave my an electrolyte replacement.

My dear old dad that is a wilderness EMT says that you need to drink water until you piss copious and clear. Any more and your just running it through. Granted it is really difficult to drink too much water. I think you can overdo it though. If your well hydrated drinking more just doesn’t make a difference. I notice this effect during everyday life. Well hydrated I feel good and have plenty of energy. Over hydrated I don’t quite have the same energy level. Just something to think about.

Would it be better to drink something like Gatorade to replace the electrolytes in your system instead of water?

Electrolytes are pretty misunderstood. (Gatorade is a product of mass marketing. Just like people think that snapple is healthy.) eating right does the trick. If you are going through some serious long term physical activity, like mountain climbing, adventure race, etc. Electrolyte replacements are a good bet because you body is too stressed to digest properly so the easier to digest the better like drinks or gels. Gatorade is not one of them.

.. I guess to sum it up there is no replacement for water.

Let’s not forget what energy drinks are composed of. If you look at the label for gatorade (and all like it) it contains the same 3 ingredients:

Water, Carbohydrates (sugar usually in the form of high fructose corn syrup), and Electrolytes (a fancy word for salt)

You can make your own home-made energy drink by making iced tea (lemon iced tea with a 1/4 teaspoon of table salt and some honey) or kool-aid with some salt. There are lots of recipes online.

If you’ve been exercising for more than 45min and need to go longer, it can be helpful to drink some (but not too much) gatorade. For sedentary people, water would be a much better choice.

like i said electrolytes are misunderstood. To say that electrolytes are just salt is over simplifying things a bit. Specifically they are the ions that are used in conduction in the body. Sure sodium is one of them but don’t forget the very important potassium (which some old folks get deficiencies in and get pretty strange) and there is also magnesium, calcium, phosphate and sulfate.But don’t fret about all this your kidneys make sure all these things are in balance in most cases. just eat your vegetables. drink plenty of water. On a long day try just having a good old banana, you will be amazed. As we have learned here on Thunder’s, that if we learn a little bit about how things work and listen to our bodies we can do much better than what some asshole cooks up in a lab.
