DMSO in a plastic container

Dear all,

I just received some 99.5% DMSO, but it came inside a plastic bottle that looks a little bit weird, full of little bubbles, as if it´s burned or something.

What do you advise me to do, use it or lose it ?

What little symbol is on the bottom?
Plastic isn’t per se bad— if the plastic is non reactive with DMSO you’re good to go.

IIRC DMSO is safe with polyethylene?

There´s no symbol on the bottom, but the plastic is a bit white on the top part, close to the lid…

The packaging it came in is not very protective, so I´m guessing it took some bumps along the way.

Not the point— plastic is either reactive or non-reactive to it’s contents— chances are that if it was shipped by a reputable supplier then you’re good to go.
Most all plastic containers have a little symbol [generally a triangle IIRC] and code defining what plastic it is, so that you know what you can put in it. Flimsy plastic containers can hold liquids that would eat happily through ceramic or metal— or flesh and bone.

So watch your ass, kemo-sabe.

Well, I don’t think I would use DMSO from plastic for anything other than actually stripping furniture, because it will carry any dissolved plastic straight into your body. It’s function when applied topically will carry into your body whatever is dissolved in it.

And yet IF THE PLASTIC BOTTLE IT IS CONTAINED IN IS CHEMICALLY NONREACTIVE TO DMSO IT WON'T HAVE ANY DISSOLVED PLASTIC

Is plastic reactive with water? Yet there are aspects of plastic that leech into the water contained in it. There are also other chemicals used in the manufacture of plastic, such as arsenic, that may very well be reactive with DMSO. I am merely advocating safety.

Whoa, absolutely. DMSO should not be sitting around in plastics.
Glass. Amber borosilicate glass. (DMSO is also somewhat light-sensitive, and should be kept in the dark.)

Then again, 99.5% pure? I wouldn’t want that touching me anyway.

Oh dear…I´m happy I didn´t use it, then :)
Now it´s time to throw it away, unfortunately.

Does someone know a website where can I buy DMSO in a glass container in Europe ?
