Fish Oil and exercise= accelerated weight loss

Does anybody with the know have an opinion on the information in this link;

If so, what is the best fish oil to take?

Interesting link. I had been noticing an improvement in skin elasticity once taking the Fish Oil, but was not aware of specific exercise correlation (I have been exercising). There are many other reasons to take, and probable benefits from, taking fish oil.

As for Brands, perhaps this thread:

Very interesting. Zane will like this.

There’s a lot of research on this topic.

I agree with Makyen that fish oil supplementation appears to have a host of diverse health benefits. I take a substantial dose daily, since I don’t otherwise get almost any Omega 3 fatty acids in my diet.

In my opinion all the brands are probably equivalent except in price — just check the bottle to see how much DHA+EPA is in each pill, so that you take the amount you desire.

Yeah sweet. I don’t eat fish, and I don’t really plan to any time soon, so these supplements should help. Plus there are so many other benefits to the fish oil, you read that article and it’s almost like, well why wouldnt you be taking this stuff?

No problems about the link!

Makyen, that link is not much help for me, I dont know what to look for!

Just let me know what to look for (ingrediant wise) when choosing a brand. Ill take care of the rest from there (probably different brands in Australia anyway)

Thank you

In my opinion the only reason to be concerned about the DHA+EPA in each pill is if you don’t want to take a lot of pills (some folks feel queasy when they take too many). But you can read the whole argument in the thread Makyen linked to ;)

The important thing is to make sure you take enough pills to achieve whatever level of DHA+EPA you desire. Many studies show lots of benefits in the 1.5-2.5 g/day range, which everyone seems to agree is safe. Higher doses are probably also safe — studies haven’t really vindicated concerns about excessive anticoagulation — but some docs don’t recommend going above 3 g of DHA+EPA per day without medical monitoring.

Great, zane. That’s the rule-of-thumb that I was looking for on selecting a fish oil capsule.

Skimming through a few fish oil threads, it looks like the optimum dose is 1-2 g per day. That follows the 3x per day dose that is printed on most bottles. Is 1-2g per day the best dose for the sexual benefits?

Damn, paragoomba, that was prescient. You beat my post with that question by seconds.

I believe that Zane recommends higher doses for sexual benefits. ~2 g/day seems sufficient for most the other researched benefits, though, which translates to ~3-4 pills if you take the higher-dose brands, or ~6-7 pills if you take the lower-dose brands.

Para, I get the impression that ~2 grams is for benefits if you are “normal” to start with. But if you’ve a problem (arthritis, depression whatever) I suspect that you might need to up that dose.

Taped onto the dashboard of a car at a junkyard, I once found the following: "Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement." The car was crashed.

Primary goal: To have an EQ above average (i.e. streetsmart, compassionate about life and happy) Secondary goal: to make an anagram of my signature denoting how I feel about my gains

Mgus, the studies showing fish oil benefits for various maladies have used tremendously varying doses. If I recall correctly, www.oilofpisces.com has some abstracts organized by disease. I think the mental-health research tended to use the highest doses.

The American Heart Association makes the following conservative recommendations :

Patients without documented coronary heart disease (CHD): Eat a variety of (preferably fatty) fish at least twice a week.

Patients with documented CHD: Consume about 1 g of EPA+DHA per day, preferably from fatty fish. EPA+DHA supplements could be considered in consultation with the physician.

Patients who need to lower triglycerides: 2 to 4 grams of EPA+DHA per day provided as capsules under a physician’s care. Patients taking more than 3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids from supplements should do so only under a physician’s care. High intakes could cause excessive bleeding in some people.

The fact that the AHA suggests only 1 g of EPA+DHA per day for heart-disease patients suggests to me that a lot of research has demonstrated benefits even at relatively low doses.

6,000 mg a day for over three years, in 60 days it slowed down my Ulcerative Colitis to more manageable levels. If I had a flare up, I could do 7,000 to 12,000 mg in a day for a week and it would retreat down easily again.
