L-Arginine/Soy Protein

L-Arginine/Soy Protein

I’ve been looking into L-Arginine and its benefits lately, and I decided to order a pound of it today. I also happened to look at my container of soy protein and it says that it contains 2000 mg of naturally-occuring Arginine per serving (I take 1-2 servings per day). Is this the same stuff as pure L-Arginine? Do I even need to take anymore than this?

I don’t know a whole lot about supplements, so any opinions would be great…

Jay,

Be careful with these supplements…

You probably don’t have it, but if you have herpes, taking large doses of arginine can cause *major* herpes outbreaks.
Arginine does have its benefits. It is the pre-cursor for Nitric acid which is the catalyst for muscle pumps and erections.

Soy protein contains Phyto-estrogens which have have been shown to decrease testosterone levels in men.

TYPO…

Sorry…. I meant to say Nitric OXIDE, not nitric acid!

Nitric acid is a very dangerous, corrosive acid —jeez!

True and the usual extraction method of soy protein is still acid if you’re using a low-cost brand so you’re not really getting a whole lot of quality. Sure, there is the geneztein which supposedly lowers DHT levels which could lessen the chance of prostate cancer but in the long run I think that soy protein should be used very sparingly.

Single-dose administration of L-arginine works much better than taking it when it’s part of a protein powder. When you take it as a protein powder the absorption of L-arginine will be competing with a bunch of other amino acids and it will be “read” a slightly different way by the body. L-arginine is plentiful in most protein sources but eating a pound of chicken won’t give you the benefit that a single-dose of L-arginine does.

JAPP,

~90% of world’s population is infected with herpes, mainly herpes type 1, that causes fever blisters/cold sores. I know that I’m infected, I was a herpes virologist and I tested myself….but I’ve never had a cold sore/fever blister so I can take supra-physiologic amounts of L-Arginine….I’ve take ~20 gms/dy but routinely take 10 - 15 gms/dy.

I’m 65 yo and it seems that if I was going to have a herpes outbreak, it would have occurred already.

Just my experiences…

Word. Get some Whey protein.

Better amino profile (much, much better) and no estrogen enhancement…
