To All,

I really apprevciate this site, not just the PE related info, but all of the non-PE general information, a lot which which is entertaining, practical and helpful.

I have been a member for some time but have very seldom posted. But I came across something on the internet last weekend that I would like to share and hope you may find as interesting and for me, eye-opening, as I do.

Confused About the Amount of Vitamin D You Need? - LewRockwell LewRockwell.com

In short, the link will take you to a page on Vitamin D.

I am taking this information seriously and plan to make sure I get adequate sunlight exposure and when I can’t, adequate Vitamin D supplements.

Best of health to all of you.

I totally believe in the health benefits of sunshine and vitamin D. I think all of this preaching about how dangerous the Sun is has just gone off the deep end. Sunshine brings life and health to this planet, not death and disease. Everything in moderation though, of course. :)

Thanks for your informative link danmarky. I too am a firm believer in sunshine and Vitamin D. Sadly I couldn’t make it on holiday this year (getting there I mean), but strangely, only this morning I was in the Supermarket and they had a plentiful supply of Vitamin D, and other main Vitamins there. So I got a months supply.

I love being outdoors in the sun. And I don’t do sunscreen often, much to my doctors dismay.

sunny A day without sunshine is like a day without laughter :sun:

The part about “more cancers where the sun doesn’t shine” amkes me want to start nude sunbathing. I am sure the neighbors would love that.

I wish docs like this one would back their shit up with links to online studies. Tracking that kind of shit down to see if the doc is doing a spin job is a real pain in the ass. Ought to be a law, if you site a study, you are responsible for linking to that study in a way that joe blow can actually access the study.

I, too, think that people are overly fearful of sun exposure. I have so many friends who always slather up all exposed body parts in sunscreen when going outside for more than a few minutes.

As the doc said in that article, there’s little to no evidence that sun exposure increases risk of melanoma — and some evidence that it actually protects against it — and the increased risk of the less lethal skin cancers is mainly from severe burns (which obviously should be avoided, even ignoring cancer!).

I use sunscreen to avoid burns when going on long outings but don’t worry about the 30 to 60 minutes a day I typically walk around in the sun just going about my normal activities.

I think it’s more to do with the type of skin one has PG. Like you, I can go out in the sun and only need Lotion when on holiday where I will be more exposed than normal. But my sister who had a much lighter skin did in fact die of skin cancer, . My other sister, like myself, has a darket skin and that probably is added protection.

Another point is that I rarely have a red skin from sunbathing, I simply tan. But that is in a more temperate climate of Southern England

Yes, there are definitely some people who inevitably burn with any sun exposure, and for them sunscreen is always a must. My understanding is that family history (genetics), skin color (ease of burning/difficulty of tanning), and number of moles are major risk factors for melanoma. I, too, have relatives who’ve suffered various skin cancers, including melanoma (though no deaths, thankfully), so I keep a close watch on my moles and avoid sunburns, but I think frequent, moderate non-burning sun exposure is probably my best bet until the evidence becomes clearer on the benefits and costs of sun exposure. (The sun exposure that has occasionally been linked to melanoma — childhood burns — I can’t control now…)

I think that this guy may be onto something.

Yes on a quick read that looks to be a real solution. So could well put the ‘creme’ makers noses out of joint.

I do remember I had some burns when I went to the Canaries just on 20 years ago they are on my shoulder, but they haven’t come to anything yet.
