Zma?

Zma?

Zaneblue recently mentioned ZMA as a supplement to increase come loads, but that’s pretty much all the info on here about it. So who has any experience with this stuff? Does it work? At what dosage, and how long would it take to kick in? How about side effects? Apparently it’s a weight-training supplement that increases testosterone levels in the body, which doesn’t sound so good.

do a google search for it..I use it daily-helps me sleep good at night among other things.

I took ZMA for a while and it really made me sleep well. It also gave me very, very hard nocturnal erections. My penis felt fuller during the day and erections came very easily.

ZMA is soporific (Valerian root) and has a particular mixture of zinc and magnesium and something else that was proven to increase testosterone levels. I took it and didn’t notice any increase in sperm production.

What is bad about increasing your bodies natural testosterone production? Testosterone is good!
It is not like a steroid which is an external source of hormone. ZMA is just a mineral supplement.

I have taken ZMA. I agree it helps with sleep. I think it also helped with my work outs. I don’t recall any increase in ejaculate volume while I was taking it. I think I was taking arginine at the time also, for ejaculate volume. I never noticed an improvement from the arginine, so the combo of arginine and ZMA also failed to give me the increased loads. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it. Everyone is different. It could be dose related.

Is there anything "wrong" with taking the individual ingredients of ZMA? I have magnesium, zinc and B6 already. One problem might be getting a small enough dose of B6. The tablets I have are 50 mg. ZMA has the amount of B6 down at 10.5 mg.

I ask about the separate ingredients because ZMA has always seemed excessively expensive at supplement stores, given the cost of the ingredients. But, this place has ZMA for a decent price:

From what I read about ZMA, magnesium, zinc, and B6 need to be mixed in just right proportions, otherwise they won’t produce desired effect.

Would ZMA do anything for people taking a multi-vitamin? Wouldn’t the multi mess up the proportions?

Good question, and I have no idea how to answer it. Maybe taking ZMA separately, say 2 hours after you took everything else, can do the trick.

Nothing wrong at all, and it’s cheaper. Victor Conte pushed his allegedly super-mucho-better “ZMA.” Do a search on misc.fitness.weights (if you can tolerate the newer, pathetic Google interface to the Usenet archive). He was full of it.

Adequate zinc is necessary for testosterone production. That doesn’t mean extra zinc beyond what is needed increases testosterone above normal, though the marketers would like you to think so.

If you’re taking a multivitamin check how much zinc it contains. Chances are your diet, if it is decent, and the multi provide plenty of zinc. Some extra magnesium is probably a good idea. A common recommendation is to supplement calcium and magnesium at a 2:1 ratio. Note that often the Ca/Mg supplements also contain some zinc.

Don’t waste your money on ZMA.

Most Zinc supplements are not in the Monomethionine aspartate form. Typically they are sulfate, gluconate etc. The ZMA, IIRC, is patented and those that market it must buy the rights. It is supposed to work better than other forms of zinc for the testosterone effect. I think there is some data to show the benefits in strengh increase when taking it, but I don’t know if it actually does anything that other forms of zinc/magnesium would not also do.
