Where do you buy decent clothes?

I’m just going for respectability. Certainly not something too conspicuous. Like Rootcap, I’m a jeans and shirt type. But for the last year, I’d been in a cash crunch, which made sartorial considerations secondary.
Prior to this, I spared no expense on jeans and shoes, buying pretty much top quality - I find Parasuco and DieselIndustry to be the most comfortable if a tad expensive. But I’ve never known diddly about shirts and stuff, and I purchase these as an after thought, getting them exclusively in bulk at China town - $10 or so for 3.

So where I really needed advice was on the tops. I’m looking to buy maybe 4 or five long sleeved shirts; that ought to do me well. Maybe I’ll post pics of my new attire after I go shopping.:)

Motivated,

Have you tried any of Land’s End’s trim/tailored fit clothing? While not custom fit, they are cut much closer to a continental style than most. Might work well for you. I really like their dress shirts.

No, I haven’t. I didn’t say anything about Land’s End, because I’m not familiar with them. I was in Brooks Brothers just last night (the night I bought my Hugo Boss jacket), and I was told that pretty much everything there is cut full. They probably also do specialty “athletic fit” suits and jackets, but I couldn’t be bothered. Also, most if not all of their trousers still have pleats. Pleats are definitely out in the designer world, and I really like the minimalist look of non-pleated trousers. But I’ll definitely check Land’s End out. Thanks for the tip.

I appreciate all of the posts by the way.

Not a very good approach, Huff!So you would look down on me?I guess it is my cultural thing, but where I am from(Russia) , you’d better dress with some taste, ‘cause otherwise you will stand out BIG TIME(especially if you are girl - that’s why I was in a bit of a shock here in the US first, well, I am over that now :) .

I think there are two extremes:p eople who dress very nicely(and nicely for me does not mean expensive, just very tasteful … you know, sneakers and leather coat is a NO-NO:) and those who don’t give a fuck how they look.Honestly I appreciate a good taste and willingness to look nice.So the way I look at it is:better be closer to the “dressing nicely” category rather than the “dressing like crap” one.And women will always appreciate a guy with a good taste wearing decent clothes(again that does not mean brand names, I go for the overall look, not the names, everything has to match and look good together).I always get complements from girls … You know, it makes you look clean, too, shitty tasteless overall look kinda looks “dirtier”(please, do not take offense to that…that’s just the empression I get).Well, my verdict was called long time go - metrosexual(that’s what I get a lot).

Now closer to the subject of your question.I say if you want to find good clothes at a good price, find some retailer that sells brand names under one roof, like TJ MAXX, not sure if you have it where you are(I am in Milwaukee, WI).Those type of megastores sell the same cool stuff like Ralph Lauren, Kalvin Klein, etc. all at like 50% discount.Very inexpensive and very good clothes. The only problem I have is jeans(my size is 32/34 which I can only find at specialized stores).

I guess the whole thing has to do with age, too.I am 25 and still am quite interested in clothes(well, I don’t think I will ever change, it is just the thing I enjoy … kinda like a little hobby, i was always the best shopping buddy for my girlfriends).

Good luck on the clothes’ hunt, my friend :)

P.S. I suggest you picture the overall look i your head before heading to stores, because without a little plan you will get lost in a store and will not know what exactly you want.

Oh, those Russians.

I’ve seen those pretty Russian vixens of which you speak, strutting around like peacocks in extravagant dress, with mini pooches tucked in garish handbags. Total overkill.

Goeffery Beane shirts. Long sleeved , collared, 2-3 buttons on v neck.

Tip, identitify the name brands you like at the big stores like Marshall Fields or Bloomingdales, then look for them on sale at Filene’s basement or Target.

I was dreaming when I thought it couldn't done, but now I know I have work to do.

Came with: NBPEL 5.875, EG @ Scarline 4.5 Mustered up: 7 x 5 Looking for: 9 x 6 Will settle for: 8 x 5.5

Paul Fredricks is my preferred place to buy, LandsEnd is good too.

Brand names aren’t so much of an issue as the clothes actually looking good on you. Where I live I often see guys walking around wearing t-shirts with brand names on them. The only problem is, the t-shirts are a terrible fit on them, and don’t particularly match their jeans etc.

I’d reccommend getting a cool pair of jeans. Diesel make some cool looking stuff, and countless brands make stuff of the same style. As for tops, just get a few nice shirts. Black always looks good, as does white. Black pinstripe is good. This is just general smart casual.

The most important thing is that these clothes fit you nicely. You can spend $500 on a shirt and it might look like shit on you because it’s two sizes too big. Get the tightest fit you can get without it looking “tight”. I have too many friends that insist on wearing large sizes all the time, and end up looking pretty clueless on nights out.

I’m sure you can also pick up a whole range of Hello Kitty attire if you’re feeling a little festive…

You’re all a bunch of metrosexuals. Check the dumpsters behind Goodwill.

Goodwill is not that bad. But you’ve got to look around.

Nice! Just don’t forget to accessorize with a nice plastic Hello Kitty lunch pail. :)

Gut Scramblin' goodness.

Yes. It is my understanding that you can accessorize in a variety of pastel colors.

Might be just the thing for our dark knight friend. Nothing says “This is the new me.” like a splash of color.
