Well I was going to chime in with some links about milk, but you already have lots of those. Estrogen is a good thing….in the right amounts. As males get older we tend to get too much though. The causes of which are widespread and not that well understood.

I know when I’ve purposefully reduced E to compensate for taking things that are expected to increase estrogen, I got some very sore joints. I’m not talking about after squatting a personal best here, I mean even just walking downstairs. After quitting those supplements everything was fine in a few days. This was a real scare to me as mountain biking features heavily in my life, and the last thing I wanted was joint troubles.

Estogen promotes the proliferation of Alpha2 receptors, which tend to occur in areas of low blood flow. You can usually tell these places as they are generally colder than other parts of the body. In males it is typically lower abdomen and handles. In women it can be the back of the arms, thighs etc. These are the classsic apple or pear shapes, and can be very stubborn areas to remove fat from.

Aside from estrogen, calcium in milk competes with quite a few minerals, including zinc, magnesium, iron and copper (and probably a few more too).

Milk also makes you smell not quite as good as non milk drinkers. I don’t know why though, and haven’t bothered to look it up yet (way down on the list of things to research).

Another place to watch out for is in plastic packaging. I’m going from memory here, but I believe it is the waxing agent that is used on plastic containers that helps prevent them sticking together when stacked during manufacture which can mimic weak estrogens when heated such as in the microwave. So always remove the packaging before heating.

If this all sounds very negative, I should point out that I still drink about 1 litre of skim per day.

Flaxseed Oil: Though an effective source of omega 3 & 6 EFA’s, flax seed oil contains lignans that act as estrogen site antagonists. I’ve always used fish oils because I read flax contains phytoestrogens. What do you guys think about the above?
I also avoid soy products for this reason.

A combination of fish oil and flax seeds may be best. The fish oil would guarantee adequate DHA and you’d get lignans and fiber from the flax.

Dino, you might try some flax seed instead of oil. It is much higher in lignan than oil, plus you get the fiber. Grind a couple tablespoonfuls in a coffee grinder and add to a protein shake, cereal or whatever.

1 tablespoon of whole seed = ~11g, so there are about 40 tablespoons in a lb. I found some locally on sale for $.69 per lb. Sure beats the price of oil, plus the whole seeds have a shelf life of a year or two.

Flax oil tastes great - sort of buttery/nutty. Keep it in the fridge. Too bad it can’t be used for cooking.

If it tastes bitter or sour it’s rancid.

I used to grind flax seeds and then put them into oatmeal in the morning, it made me shit like 3-4 times a day.
