I have about nine small red bumps above my bush and below my belly button (meaning not on my package). I haven’t visited a dermatologist yet…anyone have any suggestions? Currently, I use %2 salicylic acid after a good soap scrubbing (I know, one’s a base and the other is an acid). I’ve scraped two off with a razor after the bumps had reached a “scrap-able” size. This leaves a smooth pink mark (which is more acceptable than a red bump).

Ugh…I want this to go away.

Are you sexually active? If so, you and your partner are probably giving the virus to each other. Some say the lesions will evantually go away, but many opt for treatment. Some forms of treatment are not easy to do yourself since they involve the application of a freezing agent or chemical cautery. However, squeezing the lesion or using a needle to remove the soft center is one method you can do yourself. See these links for more info:

Recently, the use of common duct tape alone to cure warts has been formally studied, and found to work well - in fact, better than conventional (and uncomfortable) treatments. Here is what I wrote in my newsletter for October 15, 2002:

Simple duct tape treatment is more effective than liquid nitrogen freezing for common warts. This study of 51 patients compared standard liquid nitrogen freezing (cryotherapy) to a treatment which consisted of covering the wart with duct tape. In the liquid nitrogen group, 60% of the warts were cured, but duct tape treatment eliminated 85% of the warts within the two month limit of the study. The warts that responded to treatment usually did so within the first month of either therapy. Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine 2002;156:971-974.

The duct tape treatment is done in this manner: cover the wart with duct tape (chosen for its sticky qualities) for 6 days. Leave the tape on, and don’t remove it even for bathing. On the seventh day remove the tape, soak the wart in warm water and gently abrade it with a course emery board or pumice stone. Allow the wart to dry and harden again overnight, then reapply the duct tape for another 6 days. If the tape comes off before the sixth day, reapply it. Repeat this cycle for a minimum of 4 weeks treatment.

This treatment is not new (we call duct tape "special magic wart tape") but this article provides the first official scientific support for the treatment.

Hobby, what’s the theory of this? Is there something in the duct tape adhesive or is it just a process of gradual oxygen-starvation of the skin surface?

I read that better blood supply does the trick. Tape softens the wart, allowing blood vessels to grow into it. Then the immune system wipes it out.

You mean to tell me that duct tape will remove a wart better than that $20 freeze kit I kept buying?

I had one on my thumb. I nuked it with the freeze off stuff and am left with a ever so slightly raised pink scar. But I finally got the son of a bitch.

Okay, now I’m curious if there are any suggestions to improve the look of the subtle scarring left behind from scraping a few of the bumps off. I just started using cocoa butter lotion today…any other ideas?

If that doesn’t work for you, try Mcderma. My wife had a severe car accident and had surgical scars on several limbs and hip. In her case the scars never went completely away (they are raised). But, the redness definitely went away. This over the counter medicine was recommended by the surgical nursing staff and it comes highly rated from the other patients we talked to. It is not an overnight medicine but, with several apps it will work. Also, the stuff ain’t cheap.

My 14 year old eliminated a wart from his hand with duct tape. And he didn’t keep up the treatment for 4 weeks.

Thanks for the reference to Mcderma, goldylox. Actually, ScarZone has been working great. The redness has faded to a light pink (for recent scars) and flesh colored for the not so recent.

Well, it appears I did a decent job “treating” my molluscum by scraping the bumps off (with a Mach 3 razor), and then treating the red scar left over with ScarZone. The bumps bleed quite a bit and do not clot as quickly as expected. I’m not a doctor so (insert DISCLAIMER here), don’t be stupid ;)

Now my issue is with my shaft. I think I’ve noticed 3 smaller molluscum bumps forming. That is not something I will handle myself. They’re not easily noticed, nonetheless, I’m going to se what my dermatologist can do for me.
