Prostate Cancer Treatment May Shorten Penis

Quote
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Men who receive combination treatment with hormone therapy plus radiation for local or locally advanced prostate cancer may experience a significant reduction in penile length, according to a report in the January issue of the Journal of Urology.

There has been anecdotal evidence that radiation therapy can reduce penile length but, to the authors’ knowledge, the present study is the first to determine if penile length changes following combination treatment with hormone therapy plus radiation.

Dr. Ahmet Haliloglu and colleagues at the University of Ankara in Turkey enrolled 47 men with local or locally advanced prostate cancer. The patients, who were followed from 2000 to 2005, received leuprolide or goserelin injections every 3 months, for a total of three doses. At month 7, radiotherapy, using a 70-Gy dose, was initiated and continued for 7 weeks.

Just before treatment began, the average stretched penile length was 5.6 inches. Eighteen months later, the average penile length had shortened significantly to 3.4 inches.

Erectile function was also adversely affected by treatment. Roughly 23 percent of men had normal erectile function before therapy. Eighteen months later, 12.5 percent were able to have an erection that was suitable for intercourse.

"Quality of life concerns are important when considering treatment options for prostate cancer," the investigators conclude. Before starting combination hormone and radiation therapy, the patient should be told that "penile shortening may occur."

That’s alot of length lost.

Does anyone have any idea where the (average) 2.2” of length may have gone? This is stretched flaccids we’re talking about, not erections, so it’s a bit of a mystery to me…

I would guess that the radiation and DHT inhibitors would shrink the prostate causing the penis to retract into the resulting void, this combined with prolonged periods of no erections could also lead to shrinkage.

Again I say I’m only guessing.

It says the AVERAGE decrease in length was a whopping 2.2 inches.

WOW!!!!!!!

The GOOD news is if it can shrink that much it surely can grow that much. In my humble opinion!

That’s sad, really really sad. I’m thinking the people who make all these estrogenic drugs really truly want to de-masculinize men, grow big breast, small penis’s and hair growing out of there ears. I think it might be the Red Stockings men haters out there who are behind this. This is my not so paranoid opinion, and have no facts to back it up,YET!

Speak softly carry a big dick, I'm mean stick!

The decrease quoted there is not the average. Yes, there is L loss from radiation, hormone management, or radical prostatectomy but most report about an inch, which can be regained once healing has occured and therapy is begun to restore sexual response. This therapy to restore should be started as soon as possible after threatment. Some of the old docs suggest the patient wait around for 18 months to “see what happens.” Dumb.

From this an previous posts, you seem estrophobic, kingpole. I highly doubt that estrogen therapy was invented to de-masculinize men. It has saved many lives, and I personally know a couple people who would likely not be here today had they not received estrogen treatment for prostate cancer.

I love GOLD

Male hormones (androgens) like testosterone, the principal one, literally “feed” prostate cancers - prostate cancers just love ‘em - even those cancers which may metastisize to other parts of the body just love ‘em.

It makes good sense, then, in some cases to reduce male hormonal levels so as not to encourage cancer growth.

There are other options beside hormonal treatment, including radioactive seeding (you keep your prostate), prostate removal, and more, including both hormon and radiation therapy.

It’s not a conspiracy at all. These are treatments that often work.
