Seltzer water.

In many places on the board it is recommended to drink a lot of water.
No question about it that it is good for you.

First of all I have to ask how much water should a normal adult drink as a minimum? I heard all different numbers.

Of course this number in question does not include coffee, tea, milk, beer or soda.

Over and above any other beverages I have been trying to drink between 48-60 oz. of plain water-WHICH INCLUDES SELTZER WATER. My wife in her infinite wisdom argues with me that seltzer water doesn’t count as “water”.

I could never get a definite answer from any medical person about the benefit or disadvantage of seltzer water. No one will commit.

Looking on a can of seltzer I read that there is 0 calories, fat, sodium, carbs., sugar or protein. The ingredients: “carbonated water”

So I throw it out here for discussion. Seltzer Water-Good(Same as H2O) or Bad ??

BAD!

Carbonated water speeds up muscular atrophy and gives you a better chance of kidney stones.

I have heard 8 12oz glasses a day is good. I personally drink much more than that. Seltzer is fine, but no mineral or club soda. Seltzer is not as good as regular water though.

Same as H20, monument, assuming no additives like sodium, etc. Just make sure your wife reads the labels. Some of them contain an amazing amount of sodium.

xl- What is it in particular that is in carbonated water that would cause muscular athorphy or kidney stones. The only thing I believe this has in it is carbon gas.

73 “Seltzer is not as good as regular water.” I guess that is the statement that I am trying to qualify.

8. The stuff I have been buying is 100% carbonated water with 0% anything else.

If there is some disadvantage to seltzer as xl indicates then I could stop drinking it. But if it is the same as regular water then the convenience of having it in a 12oz. can and the little fizz that you get are desirable.

But you can see by your answers why I am confused on this.

Drink mineral water. This jacks up the alkalinity and lowers the acidity of the blood levels. This is a very good thing. The acid/alkaline ratio is one of the main reasons in this country for fatigue, illness, and all other sorts of depreciating things in health.

Fizz drinks including literally thousands of brands of sodas are ubiquitous and are consumed all over the globe daily, in mass quantitites. All you have to do is make sure, if you are being very careful, that what you ingest is only H2O and CO2, or plain, old H2O if you prefer that.

If you prefer bottled water over tap water, check out the analyses Consumer Reports has done on commercial bottled waters and you will be surprised to learn that items like - I’ll make this up: “Glacial Mountain Purest Spring Water” - is actually some big city’s tap water contained in a very healthy-looking, clear plastic bottle with a stunning glacier picture on the label. [There is some talk going around that we should never freeze these plastic water bottles; I do not know if that is valid or not.]

I frequent a few health sites, and the general rule of thumb that many people use is to divide your body weight (in pounds) by two.

For example: if you weigh 200 pounds, drink 100 ounces of water per day.

The “safe water standards” in america are not all that good, depending on your viewpoint of course. The chlorine they use is not good for you. There are other things they allow, too, small amounts of lead, arsenic and other nasties that can slowly degrade your immune system. I use filtered water. I have used bottled water, and it’s good tasting, but the prices are just ridiculous. When Hinckley and Schmitt started charging me 7 or 8 dollars per five gallon bottle, I told them to get lost. Too much. I used a Pur faucet filter for a while, then I got a reverse osmosis unit and I just love it. It has that good taste to it, and theres nothing like good tasting water! Yum! If you have a Sam’s Club in your area, you can pick one up for about $150.00 and it’s cheaper in the long run. It’s easy to hook up, and once you have it all you need is maybe 20 bucks every six months to change the filters. Much cheaper than bottled water, and about the same cost as replacing the Pur water filters was, without having to do it as often.

I do wonder about the pH, I haven’t figured that out yet. My RO unit removes the minerals too, I have been looking for some way to alkalize it a little.

Sex&Guns,

Do you know anything about that? Does alkalizing help? What are the effects a person would notice? My theory is that it would make a person feel a little more “calm” perhaps, a little more “in balance” or a sense of “well being” if the theory is true, but I haven’t felt like wasting money on an alkalizer just to find out. Do you know?

I stumbled across this acid/alkaline balance due to recent tension headaches that frequented me two weeks in a row. I was getting them by staring at the screen and thinking about calculations. I got a glare blocker, wore sunglasses at work, and it helped, but still did not reduce it. I make my diet more alkaline and the headaches vanished in 4 days 100%. I read in hard water, it has magnesium, potassium, and other minerals which are alkalizing. This is critical to cellular health.

Your comment on well being is so right on. Today, on msn, an article came out that said Cancer is America’s #1 killer. You could imagine my shock as a few weeks back, I saw the amazing research done in comparison to alkalinity levels in people compared to people that died from cancer. In every single one of them, their alkaline levels were low, acid levels high. Now, before I finish this commentary, we know that regular water, soft water is neutral. PH level of 7.0. The minerals make it more alkaline, say 7.2. Also, from what we know from science class, acid/base cancels each other out. So, the more alkaline there is, the more neutralizing power to conquer the acid. The chemical makeup of blood is inherently alkaline. The garbage that we eat and drink makes it acidic, along with our urine.

Now, that being said, people always thought I was on one of my conspiracy rants when I tell them that Cancer can be cured. There have been documented cases in the last 100 years, where people, most likely through extreme diet changes, and/or cesium injections, not only beat cancer, but eradicated it completely out of the body, and did not do one f*cking second of chemotherapy. Enough about that, so I don’t get off topic.

Back to the alkalizing water. This, along with veggie/fruit/potatoes/nuts and grains diet can turn your ph levels to the better. Almost every degenerative disease known to the human race results in a low ph level, one that is moderately to heavily acidic. Is it any wonder in today’s article about Cancer being the number one killer, along with the dogs*it diets in this country, little exercise, and crappy flushing habits that cancer is at a alarming level in this country? To answer your question, yes, it will help well being. Why drink neutral water which is great for your ph levels when you can drink alkaline water, which is even better?

Look at history. People think there is some miracle that is going on, or they think that this obesity is a “disease”. Look back at our ancestors, the warriors of old, our parents parents. You will notice a few things. First, you will notice that they are not even anywhere near our obese levels. Secondly, you will notice that there were no hostess snacks and bullshit like that years back. You will also notice the amounts of fruits, vegetables, and alkaline elements, or low acid elements were a big staple in their diet. I didn’t read about too many people dropping dead of heartattacks, cancer, or any of these other diseases back then too much, did you? Our obesity rates are insane right now. 35% of Americans are obese. Not overweight, obese! That means super fat f*ck! We only need to take a look at other cultures and figure out there is a problem here. Look at the Asian culture. Not the ones who work 17 hours a day and eat dogshit and die of stress heartattacks at age 40. I’m talking about regular average Asians. They eat rice, (good carbs, slightly acidic), (fish, low carbs, slightly acidic), and many veggies and grains (low carbs, alkaline). They age at a snail’s pace, they are always skinny, or at good weight, and you don’t see them dying of cancer, heartattacks, or any of that bulls*it.

One more comment about well-being. Find somebody who is a vegetarian, or somebody that eats good meat (boneless skinless chicken, turkey) and has an alkaline diet. Then compare them to the average American. You will see major differences in skin tone, hair color and vibrance, attitude, health problems, all of it.

I met a guy like this once. One could call him a “conspiracy nut”, sort of like me, but even more extreme then me. This guy drinks alkaline water from his own machine, he has an ozone therapy kit to purify his blood, he eats mainly alkaline with a few good meats. Along with this, he takes super green supplements, and other vitality supplements. This guy has not been sick, ailing, or blemished in his skin for years. This guy doesn’t even sleep that much because of his energy levels and his outlook. He’s like a machine, in a good way. No teeth problems, no bone problems, nothing! Heart rate, blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol, they are off the f*cking charts. In fact, if you were to design the ultimate health regimen, this is the guy you would model it after.

I have “heard” that carbonated beverages can cause the leeching of calcium from your bones.
I have never seen this on paper or computer, again, merely “heard” it.
I have been for the last nineteen months myself drinking either one of two things, coffee 4-5 cups a day and
Canada Dry’s naturally flavored lemon lime seltzer water. Once in a blue moon some OJ or milk.

I can’t help but wonder myself about all that carbonation though.
Especially when isn’t the reason we exhale to get rid of carbon dioxide?
If I’m not mistaken that’s what the little ol’ bubbles are and if that’s true then wouldn’t it stand to reason
that if your body continuously seeks to get rid of it to the point that being deprived of being able to do
could be disastrous, then just how healthy could it be?
I confess though, somehow I find this extra carbonated beverage somewhat addictive.

Edgar Cayce (also known as America’s Sleeping Prophet) was probably single handedly responsible
for proposing the idea that one’s blood PH balance was critical to whether or not you would get sick.
He proposed this in the 1930’s and if I’m not mistaken, little if anything was published at all before that
regarding the PH levels of human blood in relation to health.
He went so far as to say a disease simply could not exist in a human body where the blood alkaline level
was a little on the high side. A very powerful statement indeed.
He went even further stating that it would set one’s own vibration up more optimally to become more
“in tune” as it were.

I find it extremely interesting S&G that your friend is so vibrantly healthy basing all he does on this very concept.
If you would be so kind (if you are still in touch with him) could you ask him what source of knowledge he based his regimen on.

I have been thinking about switching from the seltzer water to a mineral water,
the only thing holding me back is I too have read about unscrupulous companies selling tap water in fancy bottles.
Does anyone know of a good (and popular so I can find it anywhere) mineral water that has been tested independently and found to be legit?

Sex&Guns,

Yep, yep, I know what you mean. Acidic diet brings about your own demise. No conspiracy theory here… it’s a fact that is suppressed and downplayed these days. When it doubt, I use my little “scientific method” that is nothing more than trial and error. Ignore the fear warnings and learn something. I used to think that those people saying “carbohydrates are an addiction” were full of crap. I know what adiction is… I was an alcoholic. I know it intellectually, somewhat academically and experientially. I know what the indicators are. I quit those high-glycemic carbs, and I had a massive headache for a day and a half, but I “tuffed it out” and my headaches disappeared. My allergies almost vanished. I didn’t feel “controlled” anymore. So I don’t have to guess about it or wonder anymore… I experienced it myself. For the first time in my life, I have had some sort of control over my weight, and if you don’t think that is a feeling of empowerment, guess again. Then I’ve been doing liver cleanses, that’s too weird for most people probably (that’s their loss, not mine) but you should see the stuff that I have seen come out of me. Better “out” than “in!”

I have an air ozonator, and I just love it! (I know the good brand to get, too.) They make a water ozonator too but I haven’t got one of those yet. Do you happen to know about the ozone purifier? Blood ozone therapy has some interesting things being said about it. Got a link?

You and me should talk in some PM’s or something! :nodding:

I just remembered, I have some pH test paper packed away somewhere… I should pull them out and see what I’m dealing with here in Texas.

EZ Rider,

I have never been big on soda pop, my parents kept me away from it and I am glad they did. It rots your teeth, and I remember a series of articles in newspapers years ago about college students and others who drank large quantities of pop actually were getting ulcers from it… it eats up your stomach lining. We weren’t fanatic about it, but it was more like an occasional “special treat” rather that a daily household habit.

I know so many people that drink a case of pop every week, or every couple days, every trip to the grocery store don’t forget to pick up more cases of pop! Wow, this is just plain strange to me. It was never that important to me. Drink enough long enough and you will wonder why you feel crappy and are starting to have health problems.

Read the label on a pop can. Sulfuric acid? Phosphoric acid? Are you kidding me? Do you know what this stuff is? Poison! Death to you poison this stuff will kill you or mess you up f*cking crap. Any chemistry teacher can tell you that. Knowing this, I don’t understand why people drink it. Yes, the manufacturer will argue that it doesn’t hurt you, yes they will argue it’s in such small quantities that it does no harm. “Welcome to the Matrix.” Somebody else can drink it, I won’t. My total “pop” consumption amounts to 2 or 3 “pop” drinks per year, sometimes 4 or 5 on a bad year. I just don’t touch the stuff, unless its a ‘social’ situation or something.

Of course I smoke, so I’m no paragon of perfection either, don’t think that I am. But there are many things I do that are healthy, I don’t eat crappy carbs. I don’t drink pop. I don’t drink alcohol. I don’t do any drugs. I don’t do prescription drugs or even over the counter drugs unless absolutely necessary. I don’t take antibiotics unless I have to, they often kill the good bugs along with the bad ones. I rarely get sick and I want to keep it that way.

On the negative side, I smoke, drink coffee, and still have some diet issues I guess. I think that through processing feelings and doing emotional work the smoking will eventually disappear. I drink pots full of coffee every day, I just *luvs* my coffee! I have no great answers or solutions for that. Finally, I have that classic “spare tire” in my middle, and that is my biggest concern now. Solid research has shown it to be a pretty reliable indicator and cause of many health problems today. It’s like the “number one” indicator of future heart attacks, high lood pressure and all the stuff we have going on today. I want to get rid of it but am having a hard time doing so. But overall my pluses outweigh the minuses so I don’t “beat myself up” over it. I will get there, somehow.

electron,

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but I’m not drinking soda though, I quit soda entirely.
Ingredients in the aforementioned seltzer that I drink are four,
carbonated water (technically two ingredients there) and two natural flavors (lemon/lime)
Contains no sodium either.

What you said is exactly the reason I switched from soda to this, I thought it a wise health move,
but, every now and then, I wonder about the carbonation.
Even though for years all I drank before switching to this was Canada Dry ginger ale and occasionally diet Pepsi.

There’s something about regular soda which unnerves me, I’m not big on conspiracy theories,
but after reading once in Coke’s own coffee table book that they put out, that there is to this day an ingredient known only to all of it’s workers and importers as Ingredient-X that only the given current President and Vice President of coke knows what it actually is, they claim that because the invention of coke falls before the FDA ruling of having to name ingredients, they can get away with this, ala grandfather clause.
I find that unsettling, not to mention, once big soda companies stopped using real sugar all those years ago,
it just hasn’t ever tasted the same to me.

Liver cleansing? Would you mind telling a little about this? I’m interested.

You might want to look at all the coffee consumption as the source of the headaches and fatigue.
Coffee is a huge diuretic , meaning that it strips your body of it’s water along with essential vitamins and minerals also.Much more so than people think. Because of it’s diuretic effects, it’s a huge cause of kidney stones in people who consume large amounts of it. Essentially what’s happening is you’re stripping your body of it’s needed water. Calcium deposits form in your kidneys and pancreas, eventually forming “stones” and you walk around half dehydrated wondering why you’re fatigued all the time until the day you start painfully pissing sand out your pecker and the doctor asks you “how much coffee do you drink a day”? It happened to me several times and believe me getting to piss it out means you’re lucky - it’s breaking up. The pain, and it is real pain, of passing stones is nothing compared to the pain not being able to piss it out. This is how I learned the value of drinking lots of water and a whole lot less java. Yes, I too still drink a lot of coffee from time to time, but now I also drink a lot of water regularly. There is also the issue of all the caffeine being pumped into your system as well. We might as well be amphetamine freaks. Do you find yourself being quick to react? Especially if people suggest that you have a tendency to rattle on without a comma? Coffee is a drug regardless if people want to believe it or not. It’s also “mood altering” which is really a major no no for people in “recovery”. Incidentally, I once watched a show on discovery that said coffee and cigarettes both contain the same tars and carcinogens. Interesting to say the least. Long term coffee consumption also has an accumulated effect on your system over time and can take months to fully exit your body. Now I’m surely no “health nut” here either. Actually I’m one of those short, skinny, guys with less than 2% body fat that looks half his real age and has to gorge himself just to maintain a constant weight - which isn’t much to begin with anyways. I’m taking the time to blurb all this because I’ve been there too. Heck might even be todays 3 pots of coffee talking here -lol. I did manage to cold turkey from coffee once for almost a year. At the 6 month mark I was astonished at this huge sense of calm and well being that over took me, and it lasted. It was a really bizarre feeling. My mother had turned me on to coffee drinking at about the age of 12 and the pots been brewing 24/7 ever since. This was the first time in my life that I had this much peace and calm (especially between the ears). I could just kick my own ass for allowing myself to get geeked back up on the crap. Yes there are certainly worse things to worry about, like the real drug addiction and alcoholism you alluded to. To me it’s just kinda like a lesser form of the same thing. Peace out and good luck bro.
