One of the reasons beer acts as a supressor of the central nervous system is due, not only to the actions of the poisoning effects of ethyl alcohol, but also due to it’s being, basically, a tincture of Hops.
The phytochemicals present in Hops are basically downers. They slow your response times, dull your senses, and take the edge off of your nervous system’s sensitivity. These effects were well noted by ancient herbalists who have traditionally used Hops for headaches, pain relief, insomnia, anxiety, and etc.
