Capn's Wench Supplies

Okay, so I’ve been searching for the final piece to the Capn’s masterpiece which happens to be the 1” x 2” Grippers (soft touch by waxman). However my days of searching for this product or even a product like it to finish my Capn’s Wench off have come up empty. I live in Canada, and I have searched both Home Depot and Wal Mart with no luck. I’ve also tried a few other hardware and furniture stores, still with no luck.

So I’ve come to ask for some guidance. Fellow Canucks who may have constructed the Capn’s Wench, where have you found these grippers or a substitute? Also others, any other ideas as to where I might find this product. I’ve done all my reading up and I want to hang! Help!

I used a wedge-like rubber furniture levelling thing I got at the Home Despot.

Others have made a Wench with rubber pencil erasers as grippers, although I’ve heard that these are available only by prescription at a drugstore these days, as a pile of them was found in a Meth Lab in Surrey by the RCMP.

You are kidding about the meth lab right?

I used felt that is made to stick on furniture legs. I got it at the hardware store. It comes in 4 by 4 inch squares and other sizes. It has a sticky back and is about 1/4 inch thick.

I also made some by cutting some thin wood (like a shim or paint stirrer stick), and I glued a piece of mouse pad to one side and stuck the velcro to the other side.

Both of these gripper alternatives worked for me.

Thank you guys. I’ve been looking for something a little thicker like the grippers that the Capn used with a “softouch” side for my member.

Mravg, I’ve seen those at Home Depot and I suppose they will be my last resort.

GlandMaster I’m interested in what you used. Could you maybe find a pic as I don’t really quite understand what it is you used.

I used to have some of those erasers and they would seem to be way too tough. The white erasers, however, might work a bit better because they seem to have that nice grip to them.

Honestly, l-t, those things I used are pretty brutal. Be creative: try out some different alternatives and post them to the forums: there are plenty of guys out there who will be willing to benefit from you experiences, and you may just discover the “Ultimeat Gripper” for the Wench… :D

Glandmaster, I have been looking for an alternative thus far, but have not found anything equal to or superior to the Gripper’s Capn used. I’ll go out and give it another shot sometime this week with creativity in mind. Do you think I could settle for those 1/4” thick felt pads that go under the legs of tables and chairs?

What I would suggest, l-t, is that you find a few items that you think would be OK, and try them out.

The “furniture levellers” I used are pretty cruel, but a thin coating of RTV silicone applied to the face of them might make them a little bit more gentle. Half an eraser (cut lengthwise after being thrown in the freezer for a while) might be another option you could try at the same time. How’s about some Dr. Scholls Gel Insoles cut into strips…

Careful and creative experimentation has always been at the heart of the PE community…:D

Okay, so I took your advice and found an alternative. I think I’ve gotten a great find! The product is a comfort hand sander; it is made of a very durable, gentle foam. Now the great part is that it has a velcro attachment for disposable sheets of sandpaper, it seems to be of the same industrial strength velcro Capn used. Now the foam will require some reshaping. I will have to get an exacto-knife or something to cut out perfect sized blocks. Anyways, I’ll construct my Wenchette tonight and let you know how things went.

Oh and 8 is enough I’d still like to try those “real” grippers if it’s not too much trouble. Thanks.
