I’m the first to agree that you shouldn’t pump yourself full of pills to solve depression, because that doesnt work. I’d like to take this time though to argue against the people saying “Don’t get pills man, do it another way” because in all honesty sometimes that’s not the best solution. Yes you need to sit down and find out what’s causing you to be unhappy and there are ways in which you can make it better for yourself, but that approach doesnt work for a great deal of people because their depression is different.
Also note, doctors as a general rule try not to prescribe mood stabiliser drugs, unless it is required (well that’s what it’s like in australia anyway). It’s particularly annoying when people keep slamming the “do it yourself, don’t get drugs” because that’s not a positive perspective to take on the problem. Think of the solution not the problem!!
Also note that mood-stabilisers (aka anti-depressants as they are called) come in 3 varieties:
1) Non-addictive “slow working” mood stabilisers
2) Addictive “fast” mood stabilisers
3) Miscilaneous (everything from homeopathy to accupuncture)
Now Non-addictive ones are the best for a few reasons. They don’t take effect immediately or even overnight, rather over a few weeks as your system becomes balanced again you feel the effects of them (or rather you feel more stable and less sad), they arent addictive, so once you’ve gotten yourself sorted out and back on track you can generally stop taking them (consult your doctor first ofc).
Addictive ones are the much more dangerous of the drugs, mainly because they are addictive, fast acting and don’t actually solve the problem, but rather mask it. They are used for extreme cases and for people who have things like bi-polar disorder and maniac depression, things that are ongoing.
All that said, I’m a huge supporter of the “drugs arent the way” but in a different view, rather that I believe that “drugs alone arent the way, but combined with other things can be extremely benificial”.
Now anyone who wants to argue this with me feel free, but if you havent suffered from depression then don’t comment please, I’d rather have feedback from people who KNOW what I’m talking about rather than what their view on the subject. If you havent been there then you arent qualified to discuss it (unless you are a trained professional, in which case discuss away!)
