You’re more than welcome, because to be honest, depression is a problem for alot of people, even though they won’t “admit” it, even to themselves. Best solution is to talk about it, and then work out what’s the best solution for you!

Try St. John’s Wart. It works better than Prozac and without the crazy side effects.

PM me any time. I suffer as well.

Lost Penis!!! :helpme:

I had depression a year ago The approach I took was to tackle the causes of it. Firstly it was weight related, I was classed as obese so I started working out and dieting and brought myself down from 16 stone 7 pounds to 11 stone 7 which is well within the “healthy range”. Then I changed who I was in terms of appearence, hair style, clothes etc, and stopped smoking weed. Now it’s the penis thats getting the change!

Basically, after taking on the things in my life that made me uphappy and near suicidal it gave me a better attitude, made me more self confident and happy which impacted on my abilities to deal with situations at work, with people, with anything I guess. I don’t believe that pumping yourself full of prescription drugs is the anwser (perhaps I’m wrong), because the root causes of it will still be there if you come off the medication. Obviously I don’t know your situation and what is causing the depression, but perhaps if you figure those out and come up with a way of solving them then you will be a happier person for it. Another tip, always mentally tell yourself that you are a good person and that you have nothing to be unhappy about. After all, if you lose faith in yourself then you lose faith in everything. Believe me, it’s harder than going to a doctor and getting tablets and it’s a long and rocky road and I’m almost at the end of it myself, but knowing that you’ve helped yourself can be a lot more rewarding.

Armybob - Thanks for your great tips - I agree with your attitude. Congrats on your tremendous change - sounds as if you are a new man. Relying on pills alone cannot be the best bet - although they are needed if you are really down - to get that first leg up.
Go well

Well, I’m a newer man than I was last year lol. Theres still stuff to change in my life within the near future but it’s a case of one step at a time. One of the things that made my mind up about either prozac or self help though was a girl I knew from college a couple of years back. She was on prozac and it was no secret, everyone knew. The thing is, it just made her.too happy I guess. Almost like a fascade if it makes sense. She was overly happy and confident and it made her look like like a prat. The only other way I could put it is that she seemed to be smiling on the outside, yet inside it was clear that she was as depressed as ever and I didnt want to go down that road.

Besides, My personnal opinion is that everyone is depressed in some way shape or form, some are just better at hiding it that others.

Forgot to add something to last post! >>

Also, in relation to the phsychological effects about smaller gains in PEing, well I think that nobody should feel intimidated, especially on this forum. If people are worried about anything then there are thousands of people out there to give tips, help with routines and generally just listen. When I’ve had problems wiht injurys and stuff I’ve always had a detailed response from many fine forumista’s with a solution. Nobody here should get depressed or embarrased on this forum because everyones keen to help each other out, it’s quite rare to see so many people working toghether for each others benefit.

I’m the first to agree that you shouldn’t pump yourself full of pills to solve depression, because that doesnt work. I’d like to take this time though to argue against the people saying “Don’t get pills man, do it another way” because in all honesty sometimes that’s not the best solution. Yes you need to sit down and find out what’s causing you to be unhappy and there are ways in which you can make it better for yourself, but that approach doesnt work for a great deal of people because their depression is different.

Also note, doctors as a general rule try not to prescribe mood stabiliser drugs, unless it is required (well that’s what it’s like in australia anyway). It’s particularly annoying when people keep slamming the “do it yourself, don’t get drugs” because that’s not a positive perspective to take on the problem. Think of the solution not the problem!!

Also note that mood-stabilisers (aka anti-depressants as they are called) come in 3 varieties:

1) Non-addictive “slow working” mood stabilisers
2) Addictive “fast” mood stabilisers
3) Miscilaneous (everything from homeopathy to accupuncture)

Now Non-addictive ones are the best for a few reasons. They don’t take effect immediately or even overnight, rather over a few weeks as your system becomes balanced again you feel the effects of them (or rather you feel more stable and less sad), they arent addictive, so once you’ve gotten yourself sorted out and back on track you can generally stop taking them (consult your doctor first ofc).

Addictive ones are the much more dangerous of the drugs, mainly because they are addictive, fast acting and don’t actually solve the problem, but rather mask it. They are used for extreme cases and for people who have things like bi-polar disorder and maniac depression, things that are ongoing.

All that said, I’m a huge supporter of the “drugs arent the way” but in a different view, rather that I believe that “drugs alone arent the way, but combined with other things can be extremely benificial”.

Now anyone who wants to argue this with me feel free, but if you havent suffered from depression then don’t comment please, I’d rather have feedback from people who KNOW what I’m talking about rather than what their view on the subject. If you havent been there then you arent qualified to discuss it (unless you are a trained professional, in which case discuss away!)

Hi There is a good little debate going on here that I find useful - mood stabilisers vs a more psychological approach like life style/getting to the root cause. Maybe its wrong to exclude any approach - a combination of both maybe phased in is probably the best strategy.

Ok I’ll try to be more succinct in my post, so here goes:

I do not believe that mood-stabilising drugs should be the answer.
I do not believe that psychological/alternate approaches should be the answer.

I think that probably the best course (atleast for me and for several other people I know) is the following:

Discuss with doctor, start on mild mood-stabilisers which then improve how you feel and stop you feeling so overwhelmed. At that point start changing your lifestyle, diet, habits etc so that your moods improve (can be done with diet, exercise, routine etc), once your moods are more stable and improved your outlook becomes more positive and your goals seem more achievable. Start setting more goals, in easy to reach steps. You’ll find that after while you can just remove the drugs from your daily routine without a negative side effect and keep the stability that you’ve worked hard for.

(Note I cannot do this as due to the nature of my condition - it’ll be with me for life alas)
