Holding or release

When jelqing (using alternate hands - left, right, left, right.), are we supposed to release before starting with the next hand or release after the other hand has gripped.

I believe that methods vary. Some guys use only one hand, which obviously necessitates a release. No-release should enable greater buildup of pressure and intensity, however (which may not be what you want at the beginning stages).

I grip with the other hand before finishing the stroke to keep max blood engorgement. But as Para said, it can get a bit intense so make sure you are ready for it.
