You don’t have to use gauge, but it’s quite handy. First, you need to use your own feelings as marker. For example, despite I do easily any intensive exercise, with pump 3-4HG is already quite painful for me. After few minutes of 4-5HG I can easily get bruise, so I don’t even use that. It’s much better to do less and stay in pleasant area than to do any excess damage. You can see why it’s good to have gauge, because it clearly shows frame.
