Olive Oil As Lube Regarding DHT-blocking
I’ve been using extra virgin olive oil for my routines and it makes a particularly great (and discrete) lube. Tonight it finally occurred to me that I should read up on what, if any, effects it could have on gains. Doing a thundersplace search brought up some pretty scary stuff, mainly that it was a DHT blocker and could thus inhibit my gains. Of course, all the sources for these claims were dubious natural remedy sites. Doing a quick pubmed search, though, I got these:
Greater conversion of testosterone to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, reflecting increased peripheral 5 alpha-reductase activity in nude mice treated with high doses of cyclosporine A - PubMed
Studies on the effects of low doses of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on the basal levels of serum gonadotropins and the sensitivity of the pituitary to luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) in adult male rats - PubMed
The studies don’t test olive oil, in fact they test the effects of a certain medical substance on DHT levels and the effects of giving DHT to affect LHRH levels. The point though is that in each of these cases olive oil is used as a control, so that should mean that olive oil does nothing at all in regards to levels of testosterone in any form (or else it wouldn’t be used for the controls in a testosterone study :\).
I just wanted to put this out there to counter all the "Olive Oil = DHT Blocker" claims and hope that someone gets some good out of this info, even if it may not be completely definitive.
