It’s a common issue that a lot of men encounter when starting out, it takes some getting used to. If you lose your erection, just relax, spend some time getting it back, and then continue!
Eventually you can start kegeling blood into your unit before the jelq (only when you are ready, it can lead to injury if you put too much pressure there).
Newbie length gains can be obtained from stretching only, stretching the ligaments is a good start, however, many recommend jelqing as it increases your EQ as well as conditioning yourself. This is useful incase you want to move on to more intensive exercises.
