Let's give a big hand to Churchy Lefemme!

Wow, gosh, gee, thanks! As of about 5:50 this morning, I’m now 46 years old. After passing such a large object, I’m surprised my mother decided to get pregnant again.

My kids got me a khaki Utilikilt (Utilikilts | American made Utility Kilts for everyday wear) and since it matches my work uniform, I wore it to work today. I got a few funny looks when I visited a job site this morning.

And that’s not a green blob, it’s a turtle, Churchy La Femme, from the comic strip Pogo. Or, rather, it’s a picture of a plastic statuette of a turtle, which came as a free prize in some breakfast cereal or something. I have not succeeded in finding any better images of Churchy from which to make an avatar. I guess the estate of Walt Kelly exercises tight control over his art.

Happy Birthday Curchy! :gulp: :hb:

Happy Birthday Churchy. People are probably wondering if you’re going commando under the kilt. Nothing like an unfurnished basement, as Bart Simpson put it.

It would be crass to wear anything underneath a kilt.

Well, sure enough, right before I left work we got a last-minute domestic service call. The look on the homeowner’s face when they answered the door and saw a huge scruffy unshaven man in a khaki uniform with kilts and a toolbelt was priceless.

Thanks for all the kind wishes!

This birthday was shaping up to be a rather depressing non-event. We had a family birthday get together thing on Sunday since my kids are in school and the girl’s school is across the state. After work I was feeling a little loneley and down so I walked to a neighborhood bar to pound down a few beers and see if anyone was there. There was a miserably bad duo playing live music, a very cute chick singer and a guy on keyboards. Or I guess you could call it a trio if you count the Mac Powerbook that was playing drums, bass, horns, and backing vocals. Despite playing to a canned beat they both had timing problems, and the singer seemed to be everywhere but the right key. The girl also attempted an alto sax solo at one point, which was excruciating. But she sure looked good.

While I was standing at the bar enduring this performance I was approached by a pretty hot brunette who started chatting me up. She let me buy her a drink and I was starting to think I was gonna get lucky. She was doing the usual body language of a chick who is interested - tugging her hair, touching my forearm when she spoke, making lots of eye contact. Then she asked “So what do you think of the band?” I said they weren’t really my cup of tea, and she asked me what it was I didn’t like about them, so I laid into them. I concluded my critical rampage with a comment that it was a good thing the singer could get by on her looks because she sure couldn’t back it up with any sort of talent, at which point the lady I was talking with informed me that the singer was her sister and the keyboardist was her husband, and walked off.

Open mouth, insert foot.

That’s the Churchy we all have come to know and love!

(I read somewhere that having a positive attitude is attractive; if you can’t stomach being positive when asked something, change the subject)

I’m glad my social ineptitude can provide some amusement.

That would require being able to think on your feet. I’m much better at “mistake now, analysis later”. She did sort of corner me though, I was left with no choice but to bury myself or to lie.

They have a regular Tuesday night engagement at that bar, guess I know where I’m not welcome on Tuesdays now. Good thing it’s not the only bar in the neighborhood.

I’m not laughing at you, I’m laughing with you.

But I do find it interesting that she was giving you the signs and then confessing to be married to one in the duo? Anyways, nevermind their presence on Tuesdays - unless the music was unbearable.

I really don’t know quite what she was after. I may have inadvertently saved myself from an even more awkward situation.
