London SW1A simple rubber ring could transform the lives of men who suffer from premature ejaculation, making them increase the length of their lovemaking sixfold.
Dr M.E. Jan Wise, a psychiatrist at Brent, Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust, and Dr J Watson of the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust found that a latex ring worn on the penis for 30 minutes a day allowed men with premature ejaculation to increase the amount of time they could make love without ejaculating by five to six times.
So enthusiastic we’re the men in the trial with the device that they became more interested in sex, made love more frequently and we’re more likely to initiate intercourse than before they we’re treated. Between 70 and 80 per cent of the men found the device comfortable and easy to use.
The thinking behind the rubber ‘love’ ring is based on findings that men with premature ejaculation have penises that are highly sensitive, and that an increase, rather than a decrease, in stimulation should result in ‘habituation’, so putting the brakes on ejaculation. Around 29 per cent of men aged 18-55 have premature ejaculation, making it the most common sexual dysfunction among men.
To attract men with the problem, researchers placed an advertisement in a local paper. After an initial appointment of 45 minutes the men had six follow-up sessions. Most noticed improvements after just one week.
The flexible ring has a rounded triangle on one side with a series of parallel ridges, designed to be worn with the ridges next to the skin. It fits snugly around the penis, but is not so tight that it constricts blood flow.
The researchers advised the men to wear the ring for no more than 30 minutes every day and made love at least three times a week, either with a partner or by masturbating, but not wearing the ring. Twice this should be to the ‘point of no return’ and on the third time they should ejaculate.
Men who before treatments lasted just over a minute could keep their partners happy for almost 12 minutes - not a marathon by the standards of most lovers, but within the realms of acceptability.
