It would be cheaper and more secure.
How?
1. Establish a private small business exclusively with peers: moderators and site-owners whom you trust
2. Set up Windows 2000 Advanced Servers and store posts, user accounts, passwords and whatever else is necessary
3. Protect the data with IPSec using encryption keys and digital signatures so that only approved IPSec peers could receive and send data.
4. Hire a security professional that could solve the difficult security problems.
I can help if you need.It is one thing for a server to be down for a couple of hours during the holidays; that’s a technical glitch.
But this EZ Board thing is about trust and security. The free and well-broadcast information has fallen into the hands of trolls. .
Your information and time is way too valuable to leave dangling on a general public board like EZ Board.
It pisses me off just thinking about what has happened there.
Hope they have some decent solution after the holidays and you don’t actually have to change anything.
That’s precisely what I would like to do eventually, but I don’t see how it could ever be cheaper than what we have now. I have a hard time envisioning someone having the spare bandwidth and a server lying around that can handle the amount of traffic and queries that the EZBoard forum gets at peak times. Unless we have a philanthropist or we have a lot of people who are willing to shell out a monthly fee to pay for the equipment, high-speed internet connection, and the security consultant, and the hours of labor to keep the board online and secure, I don’t see how it woudl be feasible. I think the only thing that is being paid for at EZBoard is the CSC fee, but I’m not sure. Thunder currently is able to cover the costs of keep this site up out of his own pocket.
Also, why pay for W2K Adv Server licenses when you can go with an open-source solution? Much cheaper and there are packages that do IPSec. :D
Now, if we have a few members with servers they are willing to share with us, a private IPSec network would be pretty cool :D
Though I think there most of the PEForums members would like to see the enhanced security, I think I can speak for most of them by saying they would like it to remain open to visitors, if for no other reason than to allow fresh ideas and new perspectives on PE. There are times I wish it could just be locked down and made private, sure as heck would make for a lot less headaches! I just don’t see it happening anytime soon.
Bonzo, could you elaborate a little more on what you had in mind?
Let’s keep the ideas coming in. Maybe we can come up with an improvement that we have the resources to make.
Thanks,
