Wheres the ezboard forum??

I’m seeing newer posts than 11/19. They may still be working on it or one of the admins may need to set the “Sort by newest post” button. Dam, I’m glad at least most of it was recovered! Best Posts looks to be pretty much intact.

That’s precisely what I would like to do eventually, but I don’t see how it could ever be cheaper than what we have now. I have a hard time envisioning someone having the spare bandwidth and a server lying around that can handle the amount of traffic and queries that the EZBoard forum gets at peak times. Unless we have a philanthropist or we have a lot of people who are willing to shell out a monthly fee to pay for the equipment, high-speed internet connection, and the security consultant, and the hours of labor to keep the board online and secure, I don’t see how it woudl be feasible. I think the only thing that is being paid for at EZBoard is the CSC fee, but I’m not sure. Thunder currently is able to cover the costs of keep this site up out of his own pocket.

Also, why pay for W2K Adv Server licenses when you can go with an open-source solution? Much cheaper and there are packages that do IPSec. :D

Now, if we have a few members with servers they are willing to share with us, a private IPSec network would be pretty cool :D

Though I think there most of the PEForums members would like to see the enhanced security, I think I can speak for most of them by saying they would like it to remain open to visitors, if for no other reason than to allow fresh ideas and new perspectives on PE. There are times I wish it could just be locked down and made private, sure as heck would make for a lot less headaches! I just don’t see it happening anytime soon.

Bonzo, could you elaborate a little more on what you had in mind?

Let’s keep the ideas coming in. Maybe we can come up with an improvement that we have the resources to make.

It would be real hard to beat the cost of this server. But like speed, security costs money. I would like to hear some more about encrypted passwords. Something like that would slow down the script kiddies a little.

Good to have the PE Forum back :) We should decide on what to do…

Thunder offered us some space, but we’d need a programmer to get things going. I could make some calls and see about finding someone to do it…

I would definitely contribute financially to the forum, and if we need server space, I’d definitely contribute that as well… you guys are worth it :)

I’ve thought about it, and here is what the phanTAZtic one thinks:

1)Big Al, you said something about the troll maybe duping someone at Ezboard into thinking he was you. Go over to Newart and look for the guy posting as “H”, the guy advertising free pay PE site passwords and see if the IP address looks familiar.

2)This is, what, the third(!) time our forum has been hacked on Ezboard, and the retards running the place haven’t seemed too eager to help us. Maybe it’s time to start looking elsewhere, especially if people are paying for the CSC gold shit.

BA needs a lot of input here. He is probably sitting on a fence trying to decide what to do. I’m sure that he could use some help thinking this whole EZ Board/move thing through. So how about it, help make his admin responsibilities a little easier, give him your thoughts on this issue. Let’s not screw around and wait until we get hacked again.

I believe you should seriously consider Thunder’s offer and move the PE Forum over here. The vBulletin looks a lot more secure than EZBoard, especially after being hacked three times already.

I noticed that Thunder mentioned to have enough bandwidth and space, therefore it might be a good solution for you, until you have found a new “home” for your board. In that case you’ll make sure that your forum will be still in one piece by the time you move it to a new place.

I noticed that you posted under a different name at easy board. Did your name get schwacked too?

Yes the latest evolution of my username is a result of not having visited the forum in a while and forgetting my password. Nobody hacked it….BUT, ezboard wouldnt email me my old username info….so, I had to get the new name. Thats ok I’m done with ezboard! I’ll be staying here from now on. I like this place a lot better, it IS more user friendly, and if we could get a chat room that worked well we’d be that much better. See my post below about a new chat idea.

i must say: i am one of those idiots that hates change. with that said; i am not one who gives in and runs away from adversity. especially unwarranted adversity. i’ve always measured a man by how he reacts to unwarranted- adversity. now with that also said; that is me and only me and my opinion. i also understand the other side of this coin. sometimes it is strictly best for ALL involved to move out of the neighborhood of those like dumpster-diving strangelets.(if you go to her fridge and browse thru the 21 pics of items in her shared-apartment and read in her own words where her furnishings come from you can see she is a dd, althoug she is good at fixing up throw aways.) i still have not ruled her out as the trouble maker, right or wrong. now with all tha said, would it be best to stay where we are at until we can work ourselves into a higher plane, as well as unveal people like HER to those on the throne? it seems to me SHE started doing damage control after she was PARTLY exposed and pressure was applied with threats of going to those on the throne. maybe i’m wrong about that. but my first impression about her wasn’t. i figured he/she/it was a she because of the “let” on the end of her user name and because of the attitude towards us pe’ers in her wording of her posts/emails. what does strangelet mean? ie: a poorly understood breed of subatomic particle, which eats all matter it encounters, which could start a chain reaction that could consume everything everywhere. the strangelet would strip away the electrons of any normal atom it came in contact with and absorb the exposed nucleus. the process would continue until all matter was converted into strangelets. i think she may be anti establishment, with an anarchist personality and a person of no refinement(as in barbaric attitude). if she wants to play hardball, i bet if footwork was done she could be more exposed to her superiors with a list of immature behaviors directed against customers of her employers. in my mind it is obvious. she may not be the hacker, yet she maybe. i am also suspect of one question she asked you on bug base. she wanted to know if you knew who the previous hacker was. that ? may be nothing but i’m suspicious of it. and what if, we change boards and the trouble maker goes with us; whoever it may be, and get hacked again. would that mean we took a step backwards in our pe evolution instead of forward? i’m not sure. one thing i am sure of big al: my wife and i have an agreement. i am allowed to make the final decisions, but only after i have completely heard her out and fully consider what she has to say. i am of the same mind with this board situation. i am a member and you are the overseer, the one appointed to be in charge so to speak. i have pretty much given you my input and what ever decision you opt to go with i will support you 100% if you take our forum elsewhere, i will follow. and probably everyone else will do the same. how could they not? we are family. so take all the feedback you can handle and make your decision. i know you are a good and considerate person who actively cares about each and every one of us. don’t allow that to hinder or complicate your decision making process. we are ok. and we will be ok, no matter which decision yu choose. either way we keep our forum and remain family. so my friend, flip a coin or something and don’t worry about it. we are with you. mistered.

I’m not one who readily subscribes to conspiracy theories but, the fact remains, the EZBoard forum has been hacked numerous times so either EZBoard is a pushover for hackers or it was an inside job - or perhaps both. If EZBoard isn’t going to investigate this incident fully and take decisive action then I’ll lay money that it WILL happen again and probably sooner rather than later. For me, the biggest question that still remains is not WHY it was hacked but HOW it was hacked.

Of more immediate concern is how many members (mods included) used the same password for both forums? If the EZBoard hack was an inside job then Thunder’s may be at risk too. I’m sure you guys would have already taken care of this but sometimes the obvious…. Thunder’s is a great forum and, even though I discovered EZBoard first, it was Thunder’s that got me started. Five stars to Thunder’s Place - the best PE forum on the web!

If The Ezboard server was compromised and some hole was abused, it’s one thing, but if passwords were cracked using brute force, it’s another. Regardless of how the server itself is secured (and it would never be fully secured) the one thing that users should do is pick passwords composed of random letters and numbers. Even a known word with some number, or a combination of it with something else, is not good enough. Crackers BLAST the server with hundreds of thousands of login and password combinations, until they get it right. And if the login is already known, it’s far easier.

Having said that, of course I have no real information on how it really happened on the ezboard forums.

Given the way we’ve been treated and neglected by the ezboard staff, I’m beginning to wonder if we weren’t set up. An ezboard.com admin could easily take out our site.
