Vacuum Hanger question

123

The heavier the weight, the longer the sleeve needs to be. Heavier weights create more suction, and a longer sleeve is needed to maintain the vacuum.

I’m hanging 10lbs, currently, for about an hour.

MM, I don’t quite agree with that statement. Unless you’re also depending on the sleeve for grip (friction) to prevent it from sliding off, the vacuum should keep the hanger on. I.e., once you’ve established a vacuum with a seal, the vacuum should be maintained as long as the seal holds, shouldn’t it?. The seal shouldn’t admit air unless it ruptures. In my case, I’m currently supporting 10lb with a sleeve that’s 3” long.

I’ve been back to MB’s website and I can not see a link to order just the sleeves by themselves, do I need to contact Monkey bar and ask him about the sleeves? Anyone got any advise? Hope so, I’m on my last sleeve. Again, thanks for the reply and info. My kind regards, Lastresort

One thing - how long do you keep the sleeve? Are you rolling the entire sleeve down over the shaft? If you cut the sleeve as short as possible while still keeping vacuum - so that as short a part as possible of the shaft is covered by the sleeve - there will be less sleeve to grab the skin. Then maybe rolling away the top end to release the vacuum hole should allow you to just pull it off? Some people have cut the sleeves in two, that way you can have one half over the top of the cylinder and cover the vacuum hole and the other half over the cylinder and shaft - if you get a pin hole you’re more likely to have that problem at the bottom.

Regards, mgus

I’ve been leaving the sleeves full length, I’ll try cutting them in half to see how that works for me. Thanks for the info. Lastresort

I recently ordered some, and I just took a look at the web page again. They’re still there, on the order page, under “Accessory - Existing Customers (not with purchase)”.

I cut my sleeves but don’t use the second half to cover the hole. Seems like a waste to me. I just use a piece of tape.

Does anyone know what the current situation is with receiving orders from Monkeybar? I understand he is very sick and that it has limited his ability to run the business for the time being. I have attempted to reach him but my attempts have gone unreplied. Anyone know the latest on what is going on with him?

I think it took about two weeks to get my order (which arrived this week).

The sleeves last several weeks, if you are careful with them. I didn’t mean the constriction sleeve when I wrote head cover. I can’t get the constriction sleeve over my unit, so I have never used it. When I reorder a batch of sleeves, monkeybar included these little ovals made from the same material as the sleeves. I assume they go over the head to help avoid blistering. They definitely worked, but were too small for my head and kept ripping.

You’re right that the primary role of the sleeves is to establish a seal, rather than to hold the hanger by friction. But I think the seal is maintained best when the sleeve is longer. The seal you get with a short sleeve will be easily breached by shifting the weight or changing angles. The problem gets worse as the weight goes up. You can think of the longer sleeve as providing multiple seals in series. If a seal close to the end is breached, the ones farther back can still hold the vacuum.

How much weight are people able to hang with Vac hangers? In Bib’s history thread he mentions that the sweet spot for him — the weight at which he made the most gains — was in the 17-20lb range.

In my experience, they’re very safe.

As for blisters, they can be avoided by using compression sleeve (Monkeybar supplies one) or by wrapping or taping the glans. The idea behind the wrap is to limit the maximum vacuum that can be felt by the skin. I have personally hung 15# for 2+ hours continuously with a taped wrap with no sign of blisters.

I am now working on 3 hours (continuous) with 12.5# using MB’s compression sleeve. So far, so good.

Hey MM, you talk about wrapping for the vac hanger. Can you describe how that’s done and what you use for the wrap?
Thanks.

From the latest info that I’ve been reading about permanet elongation of ligaments, this long duration hanging should definitely produce gains. I’m looking forward to hearing about your results and opinions about this in the future.
