Maybe I was lucky with the one I fixed, as you said I gripped the part behind the needle with pliers and was able to move the needle with the edge of a screwdriver.
Maybe it depends how tight the needle is riveted on ?
I also noticed once I’d done it that the entire face could be rotated so that would have been an easier fix, prob every gauge is slightly different.
