For some guys, masturbation does seem to be way too stressful if it is stacked on top of PE.But for me, I find that edging and ballooning seem to help cement gains. I feel like it promotes healing. Rather than stressing the tissues, it seems to help my tissues. I base this partly on the function of nocturnal erections, which avocet8 describes so well in his Pumping and ED thread:

So you can see why I think that edging is healthy for the penile tissues.
However I learned two things about myself:
— going longer than 30 minutes is counter productive for me. 45 minutes did indeed require recovery (wow, I just noticed that avocet8 says each nocturnal erection lasts around 30 minutes - interesting)
— if I don’t ejaculate at the end, recovery does not seem to be an issue at all. (However it is important for health to ejaculate several times a week)
I had to experiment and find the “sweet spot.”
Some guys can tolerate and thrive from edging, other guys get way too overstressed by it. It is like you say — you can’t copy someone else’s routine; you have to adapt things and see what works best for you.
(As an aside, one of the great things I have learned from the above is that I don’t need to ejaculate to have a good time. That was a real revelation!)
I wonder this sometimes too about ejaculating. Perhaps that has something to do with the stress. I thought someone had posted a while back on one of those masturbation debate threads, that the tissues begin to contract when ejaculation happens.
If you give yourself too much stress, then you’ll lose those 2-3 hours of maitenance clean up at night. However, if it’s about ejaculation, then I’m not sure. Perhaps it’s time for an experiment.
I also remember all the edging/ballooning talks where it was recommended to get close to ejaculating, but holding it back so that DHT could permeate(sp?) the cells allowing for tissue growth. I have no idea if this works or not, but maybe I should just try and balloon. I played around with it before and got some of the signs that it’s effective. It could be a good way to finish out a pumping session. We’ll see.
