Housekeeping Reminder

Yesterday while I was pumping the plumber returned a call I had placed to him. He was on his way. I took the tube off and stuck it in my pump-stuff bag, intending to come back later and finish my set. Other things happened and I didn’t go back to pumping.

Today it occurred to me while I was washing my cylinder out to pump again that all that left-over-lube, skin particles, along with whatever, and the cylinder having been in a heated closet all night, creates a very fertile environment for bacterial growth.

Clean your cylinders with hot soapy water after each use. You don’t want a urinary tract infection and you sure don’t want to pass one on to a sexual partner.

I’ve lost the thread title but one of you mentioned recently that you clean your cylinder after every second or third use.

That is a no-no.

After using your cylinder for a work-out, you’ve got all kinds of stuff left in there: pre-cum probably, lube, skin cells and skin particles, maybe drops of urine.

Take two minutes and wash out your cylinder with hot, soapy water after each use. Dry the inside with a rolled up towel.

Then we can avoid answering dire posts about urethritis and you’ve got a spanking-clean tube for your next workout.

I use shave cream as a lube…when I begin pumping up…it forms a good seal between my dick and cylinder inner walls.

Shave cream I assume has antimicrobial properties…I let it accumulate for some days…it builds up an inside coating. I can quick pump by dunking my dick in glass of water and sliding into cylinder…that’s sufficient moisture to wet built up shave cream and make it “slippery”.

I may thoroughly rinse cylinder out every 7-10 dys. I’ve never had any infections. Coming from a professional/career microbiology background….I have some idea of what is safe and what is unsafe.

Yeah I like it alot…my first cylinders purchased in 1989 had recessed inner walls…I bought a new 1 3/4 x 8" from LAPD in ‘00 and didn’t use it for nine months because I had to lube my dick.

Pumping with shave cream is not original….

Try using shaving cream: Ray on using a VED that’s a post at Robert Young’s Phoenix5 site.

I started using shave cream June ‘01 and for first time began "packing" in cylinder; on expanded pump session I ramp up into a 2 x 9" cylinder.

I once used detol to clean my tube and it did effect my slug for the next time I pumped. It also made my pubic area itch. Now I only warm water pump. The warmth is nice and the water keeps the cylinder sparkling clean and pumping warm water thru. the pump probably destroys any nasty’s in there.

I used to clean mine every 2nd or 3rd use…sometimes because it didn’t look all that nasty after a couple 15 minute uses but mostly because of privacy reasons:

Now with the privacy issue out of the way, I clean it out after every use with liquid anti-bacterial soap and water.
I simply think its more psychologically reassuring to start out with a clean tube on every use…after-all…we all wipe our F***** ass after every dump!!! Well, don’t we??? :chuckle:

As I said I was a microbiologist and have some understanding of bacterial growth…for me using shave cream as a lube…it’s a non issue as shave cream is in “detergent” family.. Oil and glycerine based lubricants might be suitable substrates for microbial growth. I can’t comment on what cylinders look like after pumping with traditional lubes.

Actually, I think we in the US are way tooooo clean and too “germ” conscious. This is being born out by plethoria of antimicrobial soaps/detergents…and generating individuals for whom routine antibiotics are no longer effective.

I think we take wayyyyy toooo many showers….taking away the protective epidermis on our skin.

I agree.

I agree with both of you - to an extent.

But leaving an unwashed tube containing bodily fluids, lube, and skin particles inside it in a warm place for 24 hrs is an invitation to the growth of life forms you may not want on the outside of your dick, let alone entering your urethra the next time you use it.

Anti-bacterial soaps and cleansers are waaay over used. Agreed.

Warm water and plain old, usual soap, in its many common forms, is hardly something anybody should discard in this day and age.

As I’ve stated before, IMO the shave cream that I’ve used for pumping for almost two years, has antimicrobial properties and should retard microbial growth. Essentially, cylinder interior should have no/low microbial content.

Surface of my dick looks nice … no infections….uretheral meatus also fine.

After I pump, I wash out my cylinder with some water and dawn dishwashing detergent which is real effective in removing anything oily or greasy. About once a week, I will run a diluted mixture of water and clorox bleach through the plastic tube connected to the cylinder and which I suck air out of to create a vacuum. Never had a problem with infections, etc, in three years.

Shave cream btw is essentially puffed up soap.

And as I recall from microbiology 101, detergents act by inhibiting synthesis of bacterial cell walls and breaking essential bonds in cell wall to maintain integrity of the bacterium.

I was thinking about this yesterday, when some men used shaving mug to soap face up….bits of skin, and maybe saliva (body fluid) would be captured and rest on top of shave cream bar in bottom of mug…there would be no bacterial growth.

Same for individuals that might just rub bar of soap over their body….bacteria might be picked up but there would be no growth.

This is essentially what I’m doing with shave cream, my dick and cylinder.

The way that I manage my cylinder using shave cream as a lube, not rinsing out but every 7 - 10 days, if then, might sound gross…but hey…I’m a guy and these things don’t bother me because I know they are harmless.
