Using a vacuum cylinder and Hand Vacuum Pump is very simple just follow a few basic steps.
My personal experience 2 plastic over priced novelty Hand Vacuum Pumps never worked well or worked a few times then totally failed.
There was no customer support or parts just cash in the trash. Lesson learned.
I purchased a professional metal Hand Vacuum Pump with a gauge.
A few but not all metal Hand Vacuum Pumps are cheap enough to toss after a few years or just get an extended warranty. One major manufacturer has a rebuild kit.
Do an internet search for selecting the proper cylinder diameter and length.
A bead of generic water based gel helps.
I discovered that a little O-rings on fittings go bad over time from friction.
Over time the excessive pumping may cause the Hand Vacuum Pumps internal piston to wear out before its time.
I purchased a cheap O-ring assortment kit that had the O-ring diameter and thickness needed for the male fitting.
1. Check your hoses and make sure they are not dried out and have no cracks near the connectors and fittings. 2. If cracked but still flexible, carefully trim the 1/2” - 3/4” off hose ends otherwise replace the entire hose.
Diagnose.
1. First detach the hose and test Hand Vacuum Pump alone and watch the needle.
Is the needle reasonably steady? Good.
2. If the Hand Vacuum Pump all alone without any hose attached Fails The Test. Contact customer support. Replace it. OR Try to get a rebuild kit as directed by the manufacturer if one is available.
5. Attach the hose to the Hand Vacuum Pump. (No cylinder ) test the end of the hose and fitting for vacuum. Good?
6. Connect to the cylinder is it leaking still?
7. If Hand Vacuum Pump and hose alone test passes and the cylinder loses vacuum there may a worn out leaking O-ring somewhere.
Worst case scenario the cylinder plastic may have tiny cracks near the fitting threads. If the cylinder is cracked try claiming warranty or just replace it.
A few companies have specific O-rings for their cylinders.
Sometimes too much hair may cause a small leak.
I wrap my vacuum cylinders with a soft towel and store in a hard plastic case.
