Introduction |
Firefox uses the RSS subscriptions to produce Live Bookmarks. This means that the latest thread titles are available in the same way as normal bookmarks: in the bookmarks menu, a folder on the toolbar or in the sidebar. The thread titles are refreshed frequently, so the latest threads are always available without actually hitting the main forum. |
Creating a subcription |
Creating a subscription is a simple matter of locating the subscription buttons row in the footer of each page and clicking on one of the links to the right. Any button will do, as firefox only uses the titles of each post.
The links are context sensitive, so if you want a feed of the Main Member Forum, click it whilst viewing this forum. The home page provides a global feed. If you have a forum filter, this is used when deciding which forums to include in the feed. You may get directed to a page that asks you what you want to use to subscribe. You could at this point choose an external client, Google or Yahoo! but assuming you want to use firefox, leave Live Bookmarks selected and click subscribe. This will cause the normal Add Bookmark window to appear. The name of the new folder can be altered and the location can be set before clicking OK. Setting Create In to Bookmarks Toolbar Folder will cause the Thunder's Place folder to appear on the toolbar putting the latest threads one click away. |
Authentication |
If the subscription was saved when logged in, there is an issue with authentication. Logging out of Thunder's Place at the end of a session or deselecting Remember me when logging in will prevent the Live Bookmarks from loading correctly. This is a security feature, member access is required. To maintain access to live bookmarks even when logged out of the site, right click on the Thunder's Place folder and select properties. In the properties window insert your username after http://, then a :, then your password and finally and @ before the rest of the url. Though when logged out of the forum, anyone clicking on a Live Bookmark will not be able to view threads which are only available to members, there is nothing to prevent the viewing of forum username and password information in the properties box, so this workaround can cause problems. Expect later versions of Firefox to have fixed this problem. |
