No need to give up ZMA. Just space calcium and zinc as far away from each other as possible, as calcium prevents the absorption of zinc.
I take zinc immediately after dinner (keeping in mind to avoid dairy as much as possible).
Then an hour or two later, I take calcium/magnesium/vitamin d with a protein shake right before bed. Since the zinc has an hour or so to absorb before I take the calcium, it works great for me.
I don’t take ZMA, I think it’s a BS supp. The zinc improves testosterone levels (if they were deficient due to zinc in the first place only), and the magnesium helps with restful sleep. There is nothing magical about them being combined at the same time like that.
I much prefer taking zinc picolinate on its own, and doing calcium/magnesium later at night before bed.
Of course many people love ZMA and swear by it, but to each his own. I’m just saying there are other ways to get the same benefits without having to fork over 10 bucks a bottle for something that wouldn’t cost more than 4 bucks if you took all those supplements separately.
edit: I used to take zinc and calcium at the same time, and yes, I definitely noticed that the zinc was not working the way it should. When I started spacing them out, things got MUCH better.
Calcium just doesn’t play nice with other supps and should be taken on its own with only Magnesium and Vitamin D (and Boron).
