NANAIMO, B.C. - A lab analysis commissioned by the Wall Street Journal found contaminants such as bacteria, mold and pesticides in “penis enlargement” pills sold over the Internet.
The newspaper investigated pills sold by Performance Marketing, which has its headquarters in Nanaimo, B.C.
A California research lab analysed 10 pills purported to increase penis size and found significant levels of E. coli, yeast, mold, lead and pesticide residues, as well as traces of heavy metals.
Experts told the Wall Street Journal the amount of E. coli bacteria – 16,3000 colony-forming units per gram – was especially high and suggests heavy fecal contamination.
They said while the E. coli itself may not be harmful, the fecal matter, likely picked up from animals grazing near the herbal ingredients in the pills, is a breeding ground for viruses, parasites and bacteria.
The president of Performance Marketing said the company would investigate the quality of the pills it receives from its manufacturer.
He said the company hasn’t received any complaints about its products.
Performance Marketing’s Optimum pills are advertised as containing herbs such as gingko biloba, ginseng and saw palmetto.
The American Botanical Society says gingko and ginseng can, in proper doses, be used to treat erectile dysfunction, but there is no scientific evidence that any pill can enlarge the penis.
