Fish oil brands

Hobby, she said it was the doc’s clinical experience (anecdotes).

Ok. Hearsay about someone else’s anecdotal experience. :)

How does that taste, Zane?

I hate fish, I couldn’t even consider it.

Never tasted it myself. You can keep it in the freezer. Generally the purer the fish oil, the less the nasty fish oil taste.

I’m tempted to ask you to try the Sears brand for one month at the same EPA/DHA dose you are taking now and see if it gives you some sproing.

Zane, I’m not into guru worship. Your link says:

Quote
Joseph Hibbeln, M.D., a psychiatrist and chief of outpatient research in the Laboratory of Membrane Biochemistry and Biophysics at the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health. Hibbeln studied the role of omega-3 essential fatty acids, often found in seafood, in a number of psychiatric disorders. Hibbeln and colleagues examined the prevalence of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in 15 countries and found that greater seafood consumption lowered lifetime prevalence rates of bipolar disorder—but not schizophrenia or anxiety disorders.

It doesn’t say “Joseph Hibbeln investigated the efficacy of super expensive, allegedly more potent fish oils vs. the cheap stuff available at Costco.”

And you’re dodging my point/question about how this alleged expert on all things concerning fish oil arrived at the opinion you say he has.

I’m not going to answer your question because you are calling him an alleged expert after the link I posted. Nothing I say is going to make you change your mind with that sort of belligerent attitude.

So, the info in that link, which I quoted above, makes him beyond reproach for anything he has to say about fish oil?

If so, as I said, I don’t do the guru thing.

You know, in another thread helpful members here ferreted out the cheapest deals I’ve ever seen on different brands of ultra-refined fish oil. I’m pretty sure that the cheapest brand of this pharmaceutical-grade fish oil would be cheaper than consuming the same amount of health-food grade fish oil, to get the same amount of EPA and DHA.

I recently bought 1,500 capsules from Puritan’s Pride for $33.89. Each 1-gram cap contains 300 mg of EPA+DHA.

So that’s 7.5 cents/g EPA+DHA. Do any of the Pharm Oils beat that price? I don’t know which thread that was, Zane — do you remember?

Being an occasional helpful member here myself, I mentioned a couple cheap sources in what is probably the first thread on this forum primarily about fish oil.

I don’t have a receipt, but I have a bottle of Kirkland Signature brand fish oil caps. I’d guess bottles were maybe $8 last time I bought them. 300 count.

The label says 2 softgels contain:

EPA 300mg
DHA 200mg

So, 1 cap =

150mg EPA * 300 = 45000mg (45g) EPA total in the bottle
100mg DHA * 300 = 30000mg (30g) DHA total in the bottle

45g EPA and 30g DHA for ~$8. How do your super duper caps compare?

You still haven’t addressed my question about how Hibbeln arrived at his position. You’re dodging it. Any thoughts?

Kirkland Signature Brand fish oil sells on amazon for $14 a bottle. I’ve never bought a bottle of fish oil in a drugstore that cost under $10, especially not a 300 count bottle.

I don’t want to talk to you about him. I’m dodging you because you are being rude about him and it’s making me angry.

I am not a fish oil expert and my n is small, but I’d say I’ve got a good twenty people who were on regular fish oil who switched to the Sears pharmaceutical grade and noticed a qualititative difference in libido and orgasmic capacity. I don’t know of anyone who switched who was already experiencing the libido effects of the fish oil who didn’t notice an improvement.

Here’s the link (and damn I talk a lot, it took me long enough to find it)

muttley - Zaneblue, which steps to vaginal orgasms?

So the NOW stuff would give 43g of EPA and 29g of DHA for $11.00. And I strongly suspect your brand cost more than any $8 since amazon sells it for $14. Pretty sure the pharmaceutical grade is cheaper.

So the NOW stuff is ~15 cents per gram, only twice as much as the PP stuff I got. Definitely a lot cheaper than I expected. A perfectly reasonable price to pay for fish oil.

Zane, regarding the Kirkland stuff, according to CR, you need to be a Costco member (and buy it at their store, not Amazon) to get the normal price (which is or was 6 cents a gram). But in any case, according to the CR report, 15 cents is still a very good price for a gram of EPA+DHA.

$6.99 for Kirkland Signature at my local Costco. My bottle says each softgel contains 1000 mg of “Concentrated Fish Oil” that includes 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA.

One concern is what’s in the other 70%.

Not to interrupt the course of the this thread, but is it possible that the important differences between different “grades” of fish oil aren’t the absolute levels of EPA and DHA, but rather the levels of these in relation to other oils? I could see this being important if the “other oils” counteracted some of the beneficial effects of EPA and DHA.
