Measurement of Mercury Levels in Concentrated Over-the-Counter Fish Oil Preparations: Is Fish Oil Healthier Than Fish?

Quote
This study examined 5 popular brands of over-the-counter fish oil whose mercury content has not been reported previously. The mercury levels in fish oils obtained in this study are similar to those normally found in the serum of human subjects who consume regular amounts of fish. The 5 fish oil supplements tested have negligible amounts of mercury, suggesting either that mercury is removed during the manufacturing of purified fish oil or that the fish sources used in these commercial preparations are relatively mercury free. Our study results also suggest that even large doses of concentrated fish oil should not cause mercury toxicity. For example, 6 Omega Brite capsules contain 0.072 μg of mercury. This is equivalent to 2.1% of the mean daily mercury intake in the typical American population.

I’ve attached the chart.

The market for fish oils as dietary supplements is of global importance. Although it is widely recognised that lipophilic organic chemicals, particularly organochlorines, can accumulate in fish oils, dietary supplements are not routinely considered when estimating average daily intakes for these contaminants. This paper reports levels of organochlorine residues in 44 fish oils, collected from 15 countries between 1994 and 1995, including 38 purchased over the counter as dietary supplements. Despite controls on the use of persistent organochlorine substances, appreciable quantities are found in oils sold as dietary supplements. Levels are discussed in relation to the significance of fish oil dietary supplements as contributors to daily intake of PCBs and pesticide residues.

Interesting read. I’l keep that link although I’l probably lose it like all the others. It’s a shame it only compares capsule prices. The bottled oil is much cheaper but very unpleasant to take if it hasn’t been highly refined. God knows what iamuru is trying to say, lol.

Yep, PCB’s are a bitch. Trouble is, once they have been introduced into ecosystems, they hang around for several decades.

Here’s an old link that I found, regarding seal oil. I’ve lost about a dozen links regarding scientific studies!

I’m leaning towards buying refined seal oil instead of fish oil because studies aside, eskimos were the first test subjects to reveal the huge benefits of a marine diet and eskimos’ main food source is seal. They eat the blubber raw as a delicacy! mmmmmm, not! lol

The one thing that is putting me off is the fact that seals are intelligent creatures unlike fish and would know that they were being killed. They also have to be shot from a distance to stop them disapearing, so they often don’t get killed instantly. I’m not sure if they still club some seals to death but I can’t be doing with that kind of cruelty. Although the quota for killing seals will be met anyway and seals can’t be captively bred, so buying seal oil may not add to the number of seals killed anyway. Unless quotas were being illegally broken, which I’m sure must happen in some countries. Hmmmm.

For those of you who eat a lot of fish, take a look at this to find the fish with the least mercury content.

That’s a very interesting link, Gottagrow!

The table in the link below will show you how much of each fish you need to eat to obtain the recommended dose of 1 gram of omega-3’s. You can use this table in combination with the one above to understand which fish have the least amount of mercury and how much of those fish you need to eat for a good dose of omega-3’s.

From looking at both tables, Herring, salmon, sardines and anchoves look like the best options. Although I have read that wild salmon is much lower in pollutants, like PCB’S than farmed salmon.

Apart from the table, the rest of the page makes for interesting reading aswel.

Zane, I recommend that you read this. You are on 4 grams of EPA/DHA per day if I remember correctly. Ideally you should be taking it with either 2 grams of gamma-linolenic acid a day, or 1 gram of garlic extract. Given the fact that GLA is an omega-6 EFA and negates some of EPA/DHA’s ability to reduce triglycerides, I recommend that you choose to use 1 gram of garlic extract per day instead. Devided into three doses per day with the fish oil.

No links handy, but when buying canned tuna stick with the chunk light stuff. Avoid the white (albacore) tuna, which is much higher in mercury.

Chunk light is made from smaller fish. Smaller = younger = less time to accumulate mercury.

Ironically after all this up until a couple days ago I had no conflict of interest. Now I have a conflict of interest so I will stop recommending specific brands.

Gottagrow, I eat a lot of oatmeal. Cheaper than taking GLA pills. Also good for libido “avena sativa.”

Also I would never eat a product derived from seals—just a conscience thing.

“Ironically after all this up until a couple days ago I had no conflict of interest. Now I have a conflict of interest so I will stop recommending specific brands.”

I’m not sure I understand. A conflict of interest with whome, what over and how does it have anything to do with brand recommendations? Are you still upset over your doctor friend being scrutinized?

“Gottagrow, I eat a lot of oatmeal. Cheaper than taking GLA pills.”

I eat a lot of oats too, although I have mine whole or flaked, but not meal. Try soaking flaked oats in cold milk for twenty minutes, with some berries, diced apple, raisins and pecans. It’s all in the soaking.

I would recommend that you take the fish oil with garlic or a garlic extract that doesn’t contain vegetable oil and therefore omega 6’s. Taking the fish oil and garlic together is easy enough but I don’t think I would bother with avoiding taking fish oil at the same time as foods containing a little omea-6’s, like grains. I’d just avoid omega 6 dense food at the same time, like vegetable oils and seeds.

“Also I would never eat a product derived from seals—just a conscience thing.”

I decided against it aswel for the same reasons. I tried to justify it in my head for a couple of hours but after realising that there was simply no way to buy oil made from seals killed instantly without them suffering, I could not entertain the idea any longer. If death was instant, without warning, I would buy the oil, but it’s not. I think that under the circumstances of how seals are killed, eskimos are the only people who have a valid justification to do so. Or anyone else living in the arctic that doesn’t have much choice in food resources.
