You’re right, on both counts. The kidneys are incredibly complicated and I haven’t read much about them. What I have read about them has always been because of tangential interest in some other subject that overlapped.
A full bladder causes a really hard erection for me, harder than I normally get, and often these kinds of brain storming sessions lead somewhere else entirely and produce something beneficial.
I did some back tracking, it looks like the kidneys have the ability to reabsorb fluid from urine, but still have some output. So the urine becomes more concentrated. Retaining urine for long periods of time though definitely causes problems and can damage the kidneys and tear the bladder. I don’t know if holding urine over night could do that, but the kidneys are a delicate organ and I’d rather not find out. I need to piss right now and it’s miserable. Brb.
Interestingly, I remember reading a decade or so ago about testicle kung fu. One of the practices was urine retention while exercising until the urine in the bladder was reabsorbed. Chinese medicine places heavy significance on the kidneys relevance to sexuality, not that Chinese medicine is a good source of medical info because they think rhino horn has some benefit.
Here’s something that peaked my interest, vasopressin and erections. When a male gets an erection, vasopressin shoots up. Vasopressin is one of the hormones used to limit urine output and spikes when holding in urine. It’s not clear if vasopressin causes erections, however. There’s a study that talks about vasopressin causing venous and arterial constriction in the penis, so it seems like that would have the opposite effect. If it compresses the veins more than arteries though, maybe that could cause an erection?
I found an interesting bit of words, but it’s vague.

Vasopression doesn’t last long in the body, has lots of other effects that aren’t desirable. An analog that persists longer could be developed if there was a penis specific receptor. I guess viagra already exists though. I’ve never tried viagra, but it can’t possibly give me a harder erection than when I really really need to urinate.
What if we could trick the bladder into thinking it’s distended, without actually blocking urine? Supposing vasopressin was the culprit between full bladder erections, would anything triggering vasopressin, or vasopressin itself be too risky? I think putting anything in the bladder is far too risky to try because bladder infections quickly turn into kidney infections and any substance getting up into the kidneys could damage them (which would be very very very bad).
And why don’t I get a raging erection during the day while holding urine? If I really need to go I get a semi, but not a full erection. Maybe it’s because of hemodynamics? Because I’m standing or sitting instead of laying down? Maybe because of some other thing going on in the body while sleeping? Next time I need to urinate, I’m going to lay down and see what happens. No, I remember getting hard erections while trying to sleep on long car trips while needing to pee.
