How can I make hanging more comfortable pls HELP

I use to hang for a few weeks and I found it very very effective and kinda fun as you could see such a vast difference in size after stretching. However I use to use a cut up sock ( the neck of the sock) and use that as a wrap while hanging. When I hung weight, I felt a sharp burning sensation around the base and felt like the wrap and weight was slipping gradually. How could I solve this so that hanging is enjoyable and comfortable. PS I used the bib hanger which I made myself.
