Not sure if I'm jelqing correctly

I’m new to the game after a looong time off. I never should have stopped, because I gained (and lost) about 1/2” NBPEL, and about 1/4” girth. I was gaining on a newbie routine, but I got overzealous and tried to go to clamping and pumping waaay too soon. After overworking my wang, I kinda trailed off on pe altogether.
Anyway, I’m back, but I am unsure if I’m jelqing correctly. It seems as though ever since my pumping days (I pumped for about 6 weeks), my unit gets really, really hard. It’s tough to jelq in that ‘sweet spot’ between too flaccid and too hard, and it’s tough for me to not jelq too hard.
I have been trying to really get expansion on my jelqs, but it doesn’t seem like I’m getting it. It sort of feels like I’m massaging forward on my penis. I’m gripping about as hard as I would to milk, or to squeeze toothpaste out of a toothpaste. Any lighter feels like I’m just barely moving anything but skin. Is this tight enough?
I’m careful not to keep jelqing if I get too hard, but how soft is too soft? I jelq when my penis is almost as long as it would be completely erect, but it kinda hangs at a downward angle and if I bounce on my feet it slightly bends as it shakes up and down. Is this an appropriate erection level?
