Using rubber band around tube for measuring

I recently realized that I could get a more accurate measurement while in the tube by putting a rubber band around the tube near the typical length. This lets me see if I am longer or shorter than typical even if the difference is tiny. The rubber band helps me know if I am sighting perpendicular to the axis of the tube (if that makes sense).
