Active Members

I was thinking about this today and how many people on this forum would you actually say are active members? I know that this has been thought about before but I’d like to stir up the pot again because I couldn’t find it on the search engine.

My guess is 350. Now what would you say is an active membership?

Does lurking count and what constitues lurking, is it less than .2 posts a day? How about someone who has already reached his goal and no longer posts?

Either way I’d say that there are about 350 active posters (.2 posts a day).

I wouldn’t consider myself a lurker anymore but I only average .17 posts a day, that’s because I hardly ever posted from my March 03 registration to May 04.

On another tangent, as I start to post more I’ve wondered about the ages of some of the more active members. And I find myself very surprised at the ages of some of the members (but soon forget them). I think it would be rather interesting to have an AGE PAGE that would be able to tell you some of ages of the active members on the board.

The thing is it could only be viewed by those members who have disclosed their birthdays.

Now I don’t mean a thread that’s says how old everyone is because it would be random and unorganized. But like a list that you can find by clicking on, for example the Member’s List and Post Counts. Something alphabetical or numerically grouped into age groups so those interested could look at for reference. And also make it automated so that it would update itself when someone had a birthday.

The main forum page shows one definition of active members: those who have logged in here at least once in the past 90 days. The current figure is 6,256.

As for average age, there’s no way to tell. This is outdated now, but back then the average age of those who provided it in the size database was 33.8 years.

Sorry tps, I can’t quite make out what your avatar is.

I consider a member active if they fall into one of the two following categories:

1) Members who post a certain amount each month, regardless of PE activity. Like you said Thomas, some members have finished up PE and stay here to help out others. These are - to me - the most active and important members as the advice/forum maintenance and general help they provide is essential for the continued PE movement (btw, I’m not a fan of the fight club mentality).

2) Members who PE regardless of posting; lurkers or low posters. These members are “active” because they are actively PE’ing. They might login and read up to find answers to PE related questions or simply to pass the time while they hang or to keep their mind in the game. IMO, 90 days is a good allotment of time to qualify this type of active PE’er.

The only non-active members that we count as active that I see could be those who are caught up in forum/message board drama. They login and like to read the latest goings-on of the board and it’s regular members - without participating through posts of their own. However, I wouldn’t give this group even 5% of the 6k+ we have listed as active members.

nevada, some of us are trying to forget how old we are. ;-)

I would really like to see age being part of the member info thing on the right corner something like

Age:

or have it added to the profile page.

Start 5.25 BPEL x 4.36 EG

Current 6.2 BPEL x 4.60 EG

If there is some connection between age and PE gains, I agree with you.

There is, from my read of many posts (not scientifically verified at all), that older men may have a better shot at faster gains than younger men. That may not be so, at all.

If one’s focus, however, is soley on some attitude of “age-ism,” that isn’t going to fly. There are too many of us older guys here who will shoot that out of the sky.

The only reason that I would like to see ages is that I can know what guys are about my age. Also I’m interested in the age of the regular posters out of sheer curiosity.

I hadn’t even thought about which age group gains faster or anything like that.

From everything I’ve studied, it seems that in older people plastic deformation is more likely, and that in younger people elastic stretches (then returning to baseline) is more likely.

While in one way that is good for older people, caution must also be taken as it also means that overdoing it is a more forward risk.

I think Avocet has it down exactly right, as you will always find in his posts that gentle progressive excersise is recommended over fast reckless quick fixes, and that advice is applicable to all ages.

(I’m 35 btw).

I really don’t understand what you guys mean by “ageism” or “plastic deformation”. I’m just really interested in having a database that I can look to reference (more for remembering) to how old some of our members are. More or less to see where they are coming from and possibly how long they have been at. Not trying to analyze anything.
