It’s in Chelsea and was opened in the Summer of 2004, so it is actually 3 years old. It is 2-1/2 blocks from my apartment. It’s a 5 min or less walk for me. Of course it does not have ALL the fancy equipment that the big costly gyms have, so if they don’t have it I don’t miss it. I mostly use the pool, take exercise classes in the pool, ad use the treadmills, bicycles, and rowers. I will have to check out the other areas to see what is actually there.
It has: (hours Mon-Fri 6:30am to 9:30pm and Sat. 8am to 4pm)
Stretching area, strength training room,Ping Pong room, media lab, indoor volley court, indoor pool, indoor Basketball court, gymnasium, Game rooms,
3 fitness rooms, cardio room, computer center, 7 locker rooms, snack bar and eating area, and some more that I have not seen as yet.
When you are a member of the NYC Recreational Centers and outside Pools, you can use any of the 22 centers in the 5 boroughs.
Check out th New York City Department of Parks and Recreation website at
nycgovparks.org
It may not have all the bells and whistles that you desire, but it suits my present needs.
The rates are:
Recreation Centers: Seniors (55+) = $10.00 yr, Adults (18+) = $75.00 yr
Youth under 18 are free.
For me, it is a really good deal. Yes, it can get crowded, especially after school, but I go early in the morning. The way they operate, the youth are in different areas and come at different times.
PLEASE DON’T TELL EVERYONE. I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP IT A SECRET AND THE CROWDS DOWN.
