Where did you learn to type? Didn't they teach you “I” and “you?” When you come here and are reminded of the proper way to type those things, why is it so difficult for you to change? It looks really odd to me when I mistakenly type “i.” I have to correct it, I can't let it go. Perhaps it's because I've typed the right way for so many years. I just don't understand how others can not seem to care about it. Typing in “chat mode,” to me, makes you look inconsiderate. I don't want to look inconsiderate; why would you?

You can thank AOL and American culture for that. I don’t think anyone is really “taught” how to type anymore. Those bad chatroom abbreviations are mostly a result of either NOT being taught, or just straight up NOT trying to learn. You know, I think it actually takes MORE effort to type like a mongoloid than it does to spell words like a normal human being, which goes to show you how far these kids today will go to be “cool”. It’s even harder to read that garbage. After 15 minutes of trying to read that type of writing my head starts hurting.

Even common “chat room” abbreviations like “lol” or “brb” piss me off. Sometimes even our own “words” annoy me, like “BPEL” or “OTS” etc… So we’re a little guilty too. But the absolute worst culprits of that crime would have to be the guys over at the “Don Juan Center”… all that pick-up artist shit is just ridiculous. They have an abbreviation for everything over there!

All the misspellings come from hip hop culture and movies and stuff… “Boyz in the Hood”, Tupac’s “All Eyez On Me”, etc… etc… Spelling shit correctly makes you a square, man. Get with it, yo! Ya gotta dumb-it-down!!

MC Nitro,

Maybe in the 1960’s they made people learn how to type but it’s not the case now. Not everyone types 70 words per minute. So yes it is that difficult people. Some of your guidelines i agree wit, other things such as i and I is just soup nazi guidelines.

Blackrob

You don’t have to agree with them but you do have to use with them if you want to keep on posting at thunders.
Everybody has a choice.

I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work. Thomas Edison (1847-1931)

I understand the point about the translations, but I think we’re getting a little too pedantic here (IMHO!). I learned to type on a manual typewriter too, and I use a shorthand machine for my job, so my whole day is spent typing on something. I’m all for the odd abbreviation. My poor wee hands are overused, and what with jelqing and all…

Remember, the qwerty keyboard was specifically designed to SLOW typists down because the very old manuals used to get snarled up as the typists were going so fast, so they invented the qwerty configuration to stop the typebars getting caught up. Typing “you” every time in full means you’re adding two keystrokes to the modern “u”, and in the course of a day, that adds up to a lot, and if you’re courting tendonitis anyway, any cutting down is good. However, I’d also blame computer keyboards for all these hand and arm problems. In my day (only 15 years ago), when I used a manual typewriter, nobody complained of repetitive strain injuries etc. Funny that…

Online translators are terrible anyway, and hilarious too. If “u” is such a problem, couldn’t you cut and paste the text, type them back in and then retranslate? I understand the abbreviating can be taken way too far, and when someone’s post looks like a string of achronyms, then it is ridiculous, but a lowercase “i” and the odd “u” I’d say is acceptable. However, good punctuation is a must. Just do it!

Rory and Blackrob,
How about this then; This is Thunder’s Place and if he says that you must use correct grammar then you will do it or you will not be back to discuss this point.

K Bro?

Andrew is right, we must not forget that to be here and to have access to all this information and help is a privilege. Not everyone donates but everyone is allowed to participate.

Also, when you join, you explicitly agree to certain forum guidelines. If you disagree with them, then to agree would be fallacy, and will result in your short stay here.

Sorry, I don’t buy it - “u” is not modern. It isn’t being taught in typing schools and, as far as I know, isn’t in the dictionary as proper English. And that’s the main point, proper English. Our large international community, although many of them are well versed in the English language, cannot be expected to understand chat room slang. I didn’t make the rules, I just enforce them. If you have a beef about your tendinitis, take it up with Thunder.

blackrob,

You didn’t seem to have a speed typing problem yesterday, when you posted over 20 posts in a little over an hour.

We don’t expect perfection, but we do expect members to make an attempt, and if they don’t, they don’t last very long.

Uncut,
yep, Köln! :D
As far as I know, BAP is still active. I remember last summer they had a pretty successful “Kölsch-Ska”-Song.
You remember “Verdammt lang her”, right? They still play it very often here in Germany; it makes people think of the good times.
I like it.

Prost! Cheers!

OK, OK, point taken, but what of the other errors that could significantly change the meaning in an online translator, and also making ME have to re-read sentences because of poor knowledge of English, especially when it’s one’s mother tongue? The usual errors as an example: their/there/they’re, hear/hear (and the most annoying of all, “here, here” when it’s supposed to be “hear, hear”), it’s/its, and the list goes on. I won’t start on apostrophes…

I would say we’re at an interesting juncture in written English: the internet has spawned a whole raft of new words, including slang. I think in ten years’ time, “u” or “lol” will hardly be noticed. But, for now, I hear what you’re saying and will certainly abide by the rules.

I still think “jelq” should be spelled “jelque”, by the way!
