Help keep this forum international friendly

I am using a post by Dzoltrix to illustrate a point about spelling and grammar. If you use proper grammar or at least proper spelling the result is easier post-reading for our international members.

An example:

His original post:

If you translate this into German, you get this:

Now, if we make his post adhere to the forum guidelines we get something like:

Because if not then I’m like 5.8”.

The improved version looks like this in German:

I know which version I prefer. Please adhere to the forum guidelines, hopefully you can see that they aren’t pedantic, they add value to the forum as an international resource for all things PE related.

The errors in this member’s post could have been partially caught by the spell checker, and the rest with the use of the shift key.

If you require further convincing, just imagine trying to search for threads in a forum where all the words are misspelled!

Thank you ICM. This really isn’t that hard guys… there is a Spell Check button right there where you click to submit a post.

We appreaciate your efforts in making this community the best it can be for everyone.

Retired.

I’ve been wanting to start something like this for a while. I’m probably the Chief of the Spelling Police. I “remind” members more often than anyone except Thunder himself. I have a question. Where did you learn to type? I understand why people use “i” and “u.” It saves them time when in chat. No need to take that extra 200 millisecond to press the shift key for “I” and the time saved by not typing “you” must be close to 900 milliseconds.

I learned to type in high school in the late 1960s on a green manual (that means no electricity) office typewriter. I’ve been using that skill, typing, for nearly forty years. Not once did I ever consider using “i” or “u.” Even in chat, which I admit I don’t often participate in, I still can’t bring myself to do that.

Where did you learn to type? Didn’t they teach you “I” and “you?” When you come here and are reminded of the proper way to type those things, why is it so difficult for you to change? It looks really odd to me when I mistakenly type “i.” I have to correct it, I can’t let it go. Perhaps it’s because I’ve typed the right way for so many years. I just don’t understand how others can not seem to care about it. Typing in “chat mode,” to me, makes you look inconsiderate. I don’t want to look inconsiderate; why would you?

ICM, good work! Das ist sehr gut!

I learned english by myself, I’m 19, and in the gaming world I’m surrounded by i’s and u’s and cuz’s and etc’s hehe. But I make my effort here to type correctly. Actually, this is the only place I write (most near) correct english. Of course my buddy spell checker helps me out (rarely, because I write SOOO good lol).

I’m very sorry for what I did, but I didn’t read the Forum Guidelines. So I did not know that I wasn’t allowed to use slang. So I will try not to make this mistake again.

Thanks for taking “being made an example of” so kindly Dzoltrix.

The people here are just so nice to each other most of the time that you just want to throw up!!!!! LOL

How will someone just learning English understand something as “concentrated and rolled up” as what the red might indicate, and ” ‘Nam”, ever so obtuse TT ???

I always try to keep my posts slang free, unless it comes from the way I normally speak. It’s hard to catch somethings when it just sounds natural to you when you read it back. Luckily I have become a habitual spell checker.

For about two and a half years I had a really bad addiction to Everquest. I became so immersed in the “EQ lingo” that I wouldn’t even notice myself saying things like “brb” instead of I’ll be right back while talking in RL :p , lol I mean in real life. With all the bad writing habits and shortcuts you pick up on the Internet it seems to actually get much harder to write something that even an English speaking person who doesn’t use the Internet would have a easy time understanding. I am not making excuses, but it is completely understandable why people would unknowingly post something that couldn’t pass a translator.

Actually now that I think about it, is there a way you can just remove the submit button and put spell check in its place? It would probably help some of us make more legible post.

Wha’n tar-nation ya’ll fellers toot’n an’ a hootin’ ‘bout now? Tell ya’ what, ya’ll’s drivin’ me batty; m’bout go’n snatch me’s a nap, an’ all dis smart kinda talkin’ is go’n give me’s a sceery dream. I’m fixin’ to make me some good eatin’s fer I go, though.

LOL!!

Here’s your post translated to German and then back to English

“Wha’n tar nation ya’ll holzfaeller toot’n an’ a hootin’ ‘bout now? Explain to ya’ which, ya’ll’s drivin’ I batty; m’bout go’n Snatch me’s a hair, an’ everything dis an intelligent bischen talkin’ is go’n give me’s to one sceery dream. I’m fixin’ around me any good eatin’s more fer to form I go”

Anyone know a good Redneck to English translator? I need to go eat and sleep soon too, but the more tired and hungry I get the better the posts seem to get.

Oh, Sweet dreams KOG ;)

Using chat or mobile phone text messaging style is one thing. I am familiar with most of these conventions, though I am not using the carriers. However, what about the basic things like punctuation? A few full stops and commas make a huge difference. I was taught: short sentences, short paragraphs. Within your short sentence, still do not be scared to use commas. This make it also easier for the Systran translators of the web search engines to produce better output. Maybe some non-English speaking members use that. I am not a native speaker myself, though fairly conversant in it.

Ha, lol!

Dzoltrix,

Indeed, thank you for taking it well. It could have been many other member’s posts that were pulled up.
