EVIDENCE continues to pile up that hormone-disrupting chemicals can gender-bend human babies.

Earlier this year it was reported that the sons of women exposed to phthalates during pregnancy tend to have smaller penises (New Scientist, 4 June, p 11). This was the first direct evidence that such chemicals can feminise fetuses in the womb.

Now nearly twice as many girls as boys are being born in the Aamjiwnaang community, who live next door to the Sarnia-Lambton Chemical Valley complex in Ontario, Canada. And though no chemical has yet been shown to be to blame, high levels of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), which also has hormone-disrupting properties, have been found in the local soil, and phthalates are being emitted from part of the complex.

The proportion of male births began falling around 1993, says Constanze Mackenzie of the University of Ottawa. And the ratio has become more skewed since then. Between 1999 and 2003, the community saw just 46 boys born compared to 86 girls (Environmental Health Perspectives, DOI: 10.1289/ehp.8479).

People living in the community have not yet been tested for contaminants in their blood, but chemicals are “at the top of our list” of possible causes, she says.

Phthalates are commonly found in plasticisers for plastics used in foot ware, which has direct skin contact.

I remember an article saying that it was disruptive to male fertility but my memory is pretty faulty these days.

Ah, but to be one of the boys in that community in the next decade! 2:1 ratios, gotta like that.

I guess I would rather be a transplant, though, not born there with a little dick.

Teach your kid to PE. Say it’s a family tradition passed on from father to son. Is there anything morally wrong with that?

I have thought about that but don’t see how I could possibly discuss something like that with my son.
I also worry about totally freaking him out and giving him long term emotional problems, remembering how dad tried to talk to him about dick stretching.
Another concern is introducing a complex or feeling of inadequacy about his penis size, when he otherwise could go through life without ever caring.

On the other hand, it might do him some good.

Though I’m not a father (yet), I would not discuss this with my son unless he asked me about it. I went through my entire teen years without thinking about it and, even though I’m doing it now, it would have no positive benefits to have been self-conscious about it then.

Hmmm….the Doctor commented, on observing our first ultrasound at 3 months, that our baby was “definitely a boy”.

My wife is/was vegan and pretty persnickety about what she eats. Our son (now 8) is the same. Looks like a normal, i.e., “1950’s” kid with low body fat (as it should be at 8). Also hates fast food. Thank God.

What’s the age of consent in Canada? Is it 18 like here or 16 like the U.K.? (Those lucky U.K. bastards!) So this started in ‘93. Go to Aamjiwnaang somewhere around 2009 or 2011 and start chasing all those needy girls with the big dick you got from PEing!

Just make sure that you can pronounce “Aamjiwnaang” by then!
