Light-moderate stretching before hanging

I read on someone’s thread that Horsehung does this. How advisable or beneficial do you guys think it is to manually stretch before hanging. Taking experience from my TaeKwonDo training with all the muscle and ligament stretching, I do recall us doing some light stretches before we went into prolonged stretches, so this practice may have some good basis. Anyone else other than Horsehung do it?

I was advised to do light hanging AFTER heavy hanging. You reach fatigue first and then manually pull after to keep it in this fatigued/elongated state.


The "average size" is usually over-estimated. Small guys don't take part in surveys and big guys jump at the chance.

I do believe that he stretched before jelqs though.

I don’t think that there would be too much to gain from doing stretching before hanging other than for an extended warmup. After all, hanging is just stretching but with a known force.

Now stretching after hanging would be different. Stretching after hanging would keep the tissues in an extended state for as long as possible.

By doing light stretching before doing hanging, you could ofcourse reach fatigue more quicker when hanging, but because hanging is so time efficient, I can’t see any real benefits from it.

This gets mayby more intresting if we change it a little. How about hanging after an intense stretching session? Hanging would keep the tissues stretched much better.

You guys might be interested in the phases of ligament healing. I found this link that explains what happens when ligaments are stretched and why they return to normal size. With this info you also learn what can disrupt the healing process which we might want to capitalize on.

Frankly I think the idea that an ADS after a hang is the best idea. I like the golf club weight idea. I don’t think it takes a lot of weight after a good hang to keep the stretch. I’ve also used wenches ring with a knee band and rubber bands to get a slight pull all the time. I’ve ADS’d for 5 and 6 hours at work. I can’t complain about my results. My problem is consistency against privacy, the kids keep coming home.

I agree with Monty. An ADS after hanging is beneficial in order to keep the tissues stretched.

Relative Material

There is some disscussion on this theory but with the emphasis on relaxation during the stretching phases both manual and with weight.

Many good theories and such regarding Elastcity By Wadzilla raises some interesting thoughts on stretching methods before, during and after in relation to deformation. A good read and some excellent theories on how deformation is achieved.
