Cleaning gunk from equipment!

I have noticed that the plastic tubing for my setup has started to grow mould on the inside. Guess I should have kept it clean after each time I used it, but I kind of left it sitting in hiding for a long while after using it….

The tubing is cheap, so replacing it is not really an issue, but that means a trip to the shops….

So, what would be the best way to clean it now, since I don’t want to risk my health? I was thinking soak it in some Methylated spirits. In future I will wash it out with soapy water and dry it more thoroughly after every time I use it!

I’d try soaking it in water with a splash of bleach added.

Ditto. I fill the connecting hose with a diluted mixture of bleach and water, let it sit and watch the inner debris vanish.

Don’t forget to flush out the hose well after with plain water to remove any traces of the diluted bleach.

Bleach is OK but is rather powerful. You might find a more acceptable method is to use the stuff for sterilizing babies bottles etc.

In the UK it goes by the trade name of MILTON, but it is in fact a 2% solution of Sodium Hypchlorite.

It is also used for sterilising water, when the source is doubtful. But I find it too powerful even when diluted way over the recommendation.

It smells the same as bleach, but is, as I say non-toxic. (taken in reasonable doses)

(Is also used to sterilize fruit and vegetables.

Don’t let it in contact with metals for any length of time.

Sodium Hypoclorite is bleach.

Yes but the type used for babies bottles etc, Is a very low and purer item than your household bleach, that is why it is OK for purifying drinking water.

As I mentioned it is a Solution of 2% Sodium Hypoclhorite, not full strength bleach and would be better for using on plastic , which the full strength stuff could react with the plasticiser in the tubing.

I use it to chlorinate my swimming pool.
