Hey J4L,
You might break the gauge if you do that, or at least make it inaccurate. Do you have a red and green line on your gauge? If so, the green line is probably pointing to four like mine is. My gauge has half hg increments on it and if you count backwards from 5, it does not have a “one” either. The five IS five, the small line before that is 4 1/2, the line before that is 4, then 3 1/2 and so on. My needle does not go to the stop either, just rests in the middle of the small square with “zero” printed in it.

well see the thing is mine rest 1 of the bigger notches from the bottom i think i can fix it or just think of it as zero and 5 as 4 or something like that i need to go take a look at it again before i do anything think for the help guys!

Hey J4L,

You don’t need a “one”. If you can count the marks backward from 5 to the one that should be 3, you will be fine. The 5 is 5, these are not top drawer gauges and they are not meant to/ designed to measure a vacuum as small as 1hg. So just use the 5 as 5 and if you need a 3, then count down from five and not worry about where the 1 is supposed to be.

I have a feeling that a 5 will work just fine.

Pump Gauge pressure & all that !

Hi Guys !

I thought I ought to add my two-penneth to this one !

My (?British-made?) gauge is very poorly made. I agree with Thunder, these are not engineers’ quality gauges, and mine may or may not be similar to yours. Isuspect that these products are on fact more likely imitations of their more worthy U.S. brothers though !

Tome will not permit me to do a full answer here (Thunder won’t let me!), so if you want to compare notes or need more info to calibrate your gauge, please email me OK?

My gauge: has a green line sector from zero to approx 0.2 bars. (approx 5 Hg) The inner scale is in bars; the outer is in inches of Hg. The ORANGE sector is from 0.2 to 0.4 bars.
Yes! The pointer does not zero, but that’s down to poor assembly I think !
In use, rightly or otherwise, I stay in the green sector, except occasionally going into the orange, but usually it’s too hard to keep the vacuum up to the orange part of the scale.

Now, for the technically minded: 1 bar = 1 Atmosphere = 14.57 PSI (approx) = 760mm Hg = 29.92 ” Hg. OK ?

!inch Hg = 0.0334 Atmos = 0.4913 PSI = 25.401mm Hg or 3386.5 Pascal

10” Hg = 0.3242 Atmos = 135.97” H2O = 4.913PSI = 254.01mmHg = 33865 Pascals.

You guys will need to interpolate to get the intermediate readings. If anyone really wants me to list them, let me know, or email me please.

So my guess is, that Avocet’s 760 is actually 760millimetres of mercury, or approx 30 inches. I don’t think his guestimate of PSI is right (Sorry Jim - hope this helps you ?)

well guys i fixed it

really was not that hard only took like 10 min.

now the needle rest on the pin at the bottom which is ZERO!

and the inside of my gauge is hg the outside is in. which is what yall are going by while pumping.

How did you fix it? Just grab the thing and twist it back to zero?? If so, I don’t think that gauge is going to last very long. Yes, you want hg not inches or any of that other stuff. When someone says they are doing 5 to 6, they are talking about hg.

for mercury!

Seriously though …
This refers to one method of measuring a vacuum by applying it to the top
of a closed cylinder which is resting in a bowl of mercury. The amount by
which the mercury is sucked up the tube indicates the degree of vacuum.
There are two ways of measuring the height - millimetres or inches.
Thus “Hg” could be either!.

It seems that most gauges show inches of mercury “In Hg” on the outer scale,
and millimetres of mercury “mm Hg”on the inner scale.
Thus BOTH scales show “Hg”

Note that one atmosphere = 1013 mb = 29.92 InHg = 760 mmHg

Vacuum is usually measured relative to this.
Thus you CANNOT, by the laws of physics get a lower vacuum.
For example 800 mmHG vacuum is physically unobtainable.
Once you have removed all the air - at 760 mmHg, you can’t remove more!.

Thus “760 Hg” if you mean “760 mmHg” would be a perfect vacuum.
A vaccuum of “760 PSI” or 39643 mmHg vould be physically unobtainable!,
as it would be about 52 atmospheres!!.
(given that 1 atmosphere = 14.57 PSI (approx) = 760 mmHg = 29.92 InHg)

Thus “not such that it would survive 760 PSI much less 760 hg.” should I suspect
read “not such that it would survive 760 mmHg much less 760 PSI.”

Barometers use a perfect vacuum as a reference point, thus the indicated
reading is a positive “Pressure” rather than a “Vacuum”. This is refered
to as an “absolute” pressure.

Avocet8:

I suspect that the “30 psi on the outer ring and 760 hg on the inner … “
refers to Inches and millimetres of mercury respectively.

Modemmer:

The 0-30 is “InHg”,
the 0-760 is “mmHg”
Thus 100 mmHg is equal to 4 InHg

Jelq4Life:

As Modemmer says, stay under 5 InHg / 125 mmHg and you’ll be fine.
Get too far above 10 InHg / 250 mmHg and you risk getting a blister.
Believe me, they ain’t half painfull!.

Jelq: Don’t worry about it !
I thought about removing the “glass” on my gauge, and doing the needle trick; but when I was young (that’s a long time back !), I did some instrument work, so if your’e good at instruments or watchmaking, then that’s fine.
I decided to leave mine as is, because these bourdon tubes gauges are pretty delicate: it’s not the tube itself, but the linkage from the B tube to the little pinion which turns your pointer which is weak. I guess they’ll be just plastic, not brass - so my advice is - Best Left alone.
Like I said, we aren’t so much concerned with absolute pressure units here; we just need to be sure that when we pump, we don’t overdo the pressure ! I pumped into the “ornage” part on my gauge this morning, and lo! when I wnet to pee afterwards, it shot out sideways over everything !This is because there was quite a bit of swelling around my “urinary meatus” (that’s piss slit), which was not painful, and I hadn’t really taken too much notice until then. The effect of over-pressure (vacuum) is to swell the tissues og the glans, which if I’d held the pressure on too much longer, would have resulted in a blister ! Then: no more pumping until it had healed ! So, it just ain’t worth over-pressuring !
We only need the actual vacuum figures, so when we are talking between ourselves, we can actually be clear just how much vaccum pressure we are actually talking about. Having seen some of the awful frightening pics on Tiger’s site, I never want to go to those pressures !

I only found it recently, BUT I think it’s certainly the best pumping site that I’ve found so far.
He does two “guides” to pumping; the short one is a good starting point, and the longer Pumpers’ Guide is an excellently detailed procedural plan, well illustrated. BUT be warned, some of the images are a bit - well - EXTREME ! If you are into that sort of thing well, OK.
For me, I just want to get back my 8” that I once had before diabetes got hold of it ! Anything extra would definitely be a bonus !

BTW: I think Tiger’s site is predominantly Gay - not that it matters, so am I, but I realize it’s not everbody’s cup of tea !
Anyway, the principles are identical - aren’t they ? Gay or “Straight”, we all want a nice big cock - Don’t we just ?

table alignment

hey, modest!
I had the same trouble trying to post a table in my pe log!.
Try Adding “[ font = fixed sys ]” before it, and a “[ / font ]” after it
- although delete the spaces!. Had to add then here to allow it to show,
otherwise it does it, rather than show the code!

Your table - if I get the cut and paste right is:-

Oh well, it seems it can’t be recovered from your post. I notice that the board software
tends to replace all multiple spaces with a single space. Thus I suspect that it is this
rather than the “proportional font” causing the Problem!.
If you cut and pasted - from say notepad - you could retry it with the above tags.
