I travel for work as well. I just pack my pump in my checked luggage between garments to protect it from breakage. I also pack my tubes, but I roll them in towels to protect them as well. When you roll the tubes in towels they just look like champagne flutes. I have never had anyone question me on what they are or select me for additional screening. Also if you put this in the checked luggage they may inspect the bag but it’s done behind the scenes. I hope this helps you out.
Well, I chickened out and unpacked everything before my car service came :( . I actually have some time off, but I swear I’m going to do it! I may just leave it completely empty and if they ask me think of something on the spot. I can’t check my luggage because I only carry on and show up at the airport just in time to catch my flights.
The good part of this story is a girl I haden’t seen since college was flying out on the same flight (very random). She was also behind me in line, so I’m a bit happy in my years of traveling, this one time I wanted to bring a pump, I didn’t :) .

Just tell them it is a pump. Not necessary to tell them what you use it for. That’s none of their business. But they probably won’t even ask about it.
What I’ve learned is that if you are wearing some device when you go through security, it is likely to cause them to do a pat down, even if it has no metal.

I have a couple of home made tubes that are pretty inconspicuous, they have a one way valve from an aquarium store in the hose piece. So when I travel I don’t need to take my hand pump. Just use mouth vacuum to suck and go.

I haven’t gotten up the nerve to do this yet. Usually just take my cable clamps when traveling and clamp as a substitute for pumping.
What about filling the cylinder with M&M’s and put some tape on the ending so the M&M’s wont go in your bag. Just looks like a candy holder then.
