Propecia once every 5 days?

Okay, I know that the issue of Propecia has been talked a lot around here but I cant seem to find an answer and am hoping that some of the doctors or others who have some input may give me a quick answer.

I buy 5 mg. Finasteride Tablets and quarter them to take a little piece everyday. This has worked great for my hair retention.

My question is—

Could I just take the 5 mg tablet once every five days instead of the smaller dose daily?

The half life of the drug (the time it takes for one half of the circulating drug to be metabolized or otherwise eliminated by the body) is 4 to 8 hours. However, the study reported on this site says the effects on DHT can last up to four days. It doesn’t say what dose was used during the test. It might have been the suggested 1 mg/day or the 5 mg/day used for prostatic hypertrophy.

You could try a test of half a tablet (2.5 mg) every three or four days and see what happens. Personally, I’m inclined to go with the manufacturer’s recommended 1 mg/day since I take it with my supplements and have to be taking pills every day anyway. I also buy Proscar and cut the tabs into four pieces.

Thank you for your response. I buy the generic Proscar also and cut it into fours as well. I dont like taking pills much but I have to tell you I couldnt be more pleased with the results of taking this on a daily basis. I know that you have told me that finasteride doesnt grow new hair but my old hair is as thick as it was when I was a kid I think. You can’t even tell I ever had a problem.

Where do you guys get your Finasteride? I’ll be getting on some(paranoia), preferably Proscar and splitting it into 1/4’s or 1/5’s. I’m slightly worried about the legal aspect of getting it online.

I work with physicians who will write me a prescription for Proscar knowing I’m using the drug for hair loss. I have it filled at the pharmacy in the hospital where I work, so I get a discount. I get real Merck Proscar and pay about $70 for 30 tablets. I cut them in quarters (it would be very difficult to cut them into fifths because the tablet is an odd shape) so I get 120 daily doses from the thirty tabs. That works out to be about 58 cents per dose.

Dino, thanks for calling me in ;) I’m still on finasteride ordered from the place you stated (currently awaiting new delivery). I am sticking with the 1mg pills (called finpecia), but it’s just a personal preference, and if one’s SO isn’t on contraception it’s better not to break the 5mg pills. At least that’s what they say, because the ‘pill dust’ might somehow make it’s way into your pregnant SO’s body and disturb the foetus’ proper development.

I was not “cueball bald”, but you could regularly see my scalp no matter what my hair style. I could not longer where that Italian greased back look because you saw more scalp than hair. I was getting the “v” in the front and the bald spot on the back top of my head.

Search for “fincar” on google and you’ll see some places selling generic Proscar. I cut mine into 6 pieces and take one per day. Plus I’ve taken a month off every 6 months, since I’ve heard that it will lead to a large boost in testosterone when you stop. The only other thing I’m doing is Rogaine 1x per day, with no breaks.

The combination of those two medicines has worked great. My hair has thickened up enough to say I don’t have any thinning areas now. The only thing it hasn’t done is bring back my hairline as much as I hoped.

I wouldn’t worry about legal issues with this drug.

MDC, could you please elaborate on the “testosterone boost” effect? Sounds interesting.

My own experience is that when I go off finasteride, I have frequent erections during the day for the first week and then it diminishes. I’ve been too lazy about going to the gym for the last year, but I would love to see how it affects that too.
