Supplementation and the Hardness Factor

The Hardness Factor : How to Achieve Your Best Health and Sexual Fitness at Any Age is a new book by Dr. Steven Lamm.

There’s a web-site: http://www.theh … nessfactor.com/ , but it’s really just hawking the book.

He recommends dietary changes, regular exercise (although nothing too difficult or overly strenuous), and some supplementation.

His plan is a six-week graduation of the different supplemental elements, combined with some light exercise (he’s big on walking) and dietary changes (there are recipes in this book).

The daily supplements he recommends are as follows

80 mg pycnogenol
3 Grams of L-Arginine; you start with 1 gram work your way up.
Omega 3 supplements: 300 mg DHA & 400 mg EPA
Horny Goat Weed - 2 500 mg tablets (he likes Pinnacle)
Grapeseed Extract 100 - 200 mg
Red Wine Extract (sometimes called reveratrol) 200 mg
2 400 mg of non-flush niacin
and OPC - 3 Isotonix

He book details how to integrate these elements and there is weekly step up as you add different supplements, more walking (and other exercise), and make the recommended dietary changes.

Typically, smoking is really frowned on. It’s hell on the cardio-vascular system - we all know this right? Caffeine gets a bad rap, too.
There’s other stuff.

Has anybody read this or tried the program?

I’m hoping our recently senior member, zaneblue will chime in with her own dietary/supplemental info.

Anybody else?

My diet program for men is almost the same as for women. I’ll post it here. The BC muscle exercise for men is crude, perhaps someone here would be able to suggest a more effective regimen (although I’m keeping the Aneros recommendation because it helps men develop the ability to have tantric orgasms).

Men and women should both take every day:

Fish oil. Eight pills of the OmegaRx brand from Zone Labs, double the dosage on the label. Two pills of Carlson’s Super DHA. Don’t take fish oil like this if you are on a blood-thinning medication like Coumadin or aspirin therapy, take lots of over-the-counter pain relievers, are scheduled for surgery, are allergic to seafood or have a defibrillator. It would be a good idea to check with your doctor if you have any medical conditions before doing this. Start slowly, one pill a day, adding one pill per week. Take with food.

Women should take the RDA of calcium/magnesium/zinc (1000 mg/400 mg/15 mg). Men should take a product called ZMA, according to the directions.

A good multivitamin like Centrum

A glass of orange juice or or some other Vitamin C source.

Women who are able to menstruate should take a little extra iron, around 10 to 15 mg per day.

A half ounce of good dark chocolate like Lindt 70% Dark or Dove Dark Promises.

Of all that, the fish oil and magnesium/zinc are the most important, but the other stuff helps. The next most important thing is exercising the PC muscles.

Women should get the Gyneflex device and work their way up to being able to comfortably flex level #4. This is a baseline—results improve the more muscle strength you acquire—the Gyneflex goes up to level #6. Women should work out with it twenty minutes twice a week. Just rhythmically flex it in a way that feels comfortable—you don’t have to squeeze and hold.

Men should get the Aneros and use as directed. In addition they should strengthen their PC muscles by draping a towel over their erection and doing “lifts.” Increase the weight as the muscle tone increases.

Now for the “diet” part of the diet. The most important thing is to eat enough of the right sorts of fat. Transfats (partially hydrogenated oils) and polyunsaturated fats (corn oil, soybean oil, safflower oil, etc.) will actively interfere with the fish oil. Fats should be saturated fats like from meat and dairy and monounsaturated fats, like from olive oil and nuts. Canola oil is fine too.

Try to eat protein at every meal, as long as it’s not soy. Soy, tofu, will not work with this diet. Try to eat good carbs like fruits and vegetables, and cut down on grains, breads, pasta, potatotes, sugar, junk food, etc. Diets like the Atkins Diet, the Zone Diet and the South Beach Diet work very well with this, although you do not have to restrict food intake for this to work, just eat the right sorts of foods.

The more caffeine or nicotine ingested, the less the diet will work, especially with women. Men are hardier. Antidepressants also interfere with the diet (with the exception of Wellbutrin), however, many people going on the diet find they are able to stop taking antidepressants under the supervision of their doctors. Fish oil has been proven in rigorous studies to help with many of the same illnesses currently treated with antidepressants. Birth control pills will interfere with the beneficial hormonal effects of the diet, but some women have had success becoming vaginally orgasmic on the diet while also on hormonal birth control. And other women have needed additional testosterone replacement therapy along with the diet for best results. The diet works well with TRT because it helps to keep SHBG low. It depends on your own body’s particular hormone-producing abilities.

Many people focus on the difficult food part of the diet, when the supplements and exercises are much more important.

I think it's the woman's job to tighten up to fit her man--it's lots easier for us.

And of course caffeine and smoking are bad for erections; I should hope most men know that by now. Also excessive drinking.

Thanks zane.

This is in part his rationale for recommending the Red Wine Extract instead of just drinking the occasional Merlot: no alcohol.

He’s not saying that everyone across the board has to give up drinking, that really depends on whether you have severe ED and what your situation is.

He also recomends a gram of Vitamin C and 400 iu.s of E.

A good multi is generally a good idea so you have the bases covered.
Although, didn’t I read that Centrum wasn’t all that good? In terms of absorbtion, etc. I could be wrong. I often am.

Help me out here guys.

Anyway, have a good night all. I’m off to The Vitamin Shoppe to do more research. I’m looking into those pills of yours zane.

I’m going to do a very small study on the effects of fish oil and paranoid middle-aged men, er, man. Well, really just me. (:

I enjoy them. I just thought I would be the one to smart off before the smoking Nazis show up. Nevermind, Cap hasn’t been here in a coon’s age. I’ll clean up my mess in a minute.

Last I heard ( along time ago though) Centrum was a decent, readily available vitamin. A lot of us are afraid to go to those health food stores since Dino gave us the low down on the personnel there.

You mean all the liberals that work there? Those people that talk about socialized medicine and kundalini salad-dressing…wait, no that’s tahini salad-dressing.

I always get that stuff mixed up. Although, if someone were to invent kundalini salad-dressing it would give Paul Newman a run for his money.

Okay, I’ll stop now. Damn! Only 8 posts in and I’m already off my own damn topic.

Seriously, the tantra stuff is very good. The last woman I lived with long-term and I got into it and it was very rewarding.

I must not have been around when Dino shared his horror stories about health food stores. Is there a link?

Maybe I’m getting Centrum confused with something else. More homework. Okay gotta go. The gym is calling.

I bought the book, but I haven’t had a chance to read it yet…. It’s a shame, I paid the full 25.95 for it.

I am still very suspicious of this kundalini thingy. Everybody but me seems to be throwing the word around and seems to have a complete understanding of the term. I am still stuck on “it’s a good name for a sausage”.

Hap, I saved you a time warp.

Although I am recommending a mega-dose of omega-3 fatty acids, unlike taking excessive amounts of Vitamin C or whatnot we evolved on a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids. Modern livestock practices have eradicated omega-3 fatty acids from our meat sources, but wild game and seafood and (ick) bugs are all high in omega-3’s. I’m recommending about the amount from eating a salmon steak twice a day. High, but not unnatural.

Also grandmothers know what’s what. Grandmothers push cod liver oil, which of course is basically omega-3 fatty acids (but also has Vitamins A and D so dangerous to take in high doses). Fish oil is not some funky exotic supplement like tongkat ali. It is heavily used in the black and hispanic communities as a panacea.

Absorption is always key with any supplementation - or even just plain eating. Hence the cleansing craze that is out there.

With supplementation the thing that I know is that if you are mega-dosing say, vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid your body will pass what it does not use. If you are really over doing it with C you’ll know because it encourages diarrhea.

With some of the others it’s not so obvious. And you can overdose and harm yourself with some - vitamin A for example.
I haven’t got a clue what happens if you take more fish oil than your body can use.

I assume everyone knows the difference between RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) and ODA (Optimum Daily Allowance). The RDA or minimum daily requirement, as it is sometimes also called, is what you need to keep from getting problems from the vitamin deficiency. For vitamin C the RDA is what you need to keep yourself safe from scurvy. However, in vitamin C’s case, it has been found that the body can use much more C than that - MUCH more.

This depends on your age, your lifestyle, where you live (whether a city dweller or not), what your basic diet is, etc.

In other words, the relationships between your overall health, your age, and the stressors you typically have.

I live in New York. You basically can’t have enough anti-oxidants in New York. Air filters are also a really big seller here. I’m thinking of buying another one.

I’m not really Mr. Science, and I have OCD tendencies so I’m sure I over-supplement. But I’ve read a little Gary Null, and some Dr. Andrew Weill.

Weill I particularly like because he’s sort of East meets West with his Harvard medical and Chinese herbology training. His website had a vitamin adviser quiz where you answered all sorts of questions and it would tell you what you needed to take. That was where my initial intro to vitamins came from. I almost died of pneumonia and after that episode I read his “Eight Weeks to Optimum Health” and just sort of pursued it from there.

I just did a search on his Vitamin Advisor but all the links were dead.

I was spelling his name wrong. It’s Dr. Andrew Weil.

Here’s the link: The Vitamin Advisor

I like him and if you’ve ever heard him speak, he is actually very common sense and reasonable in his presentation - sort of like avocet, except he looks like a koala bear and I have an impression of avocet as some kind of rare wading bird.

Anyway, the questionaire will lead you through steps. Now, he’s selling his own vitamins. He didn’t used to do this so I had more trust in him than Gary Null. Now, well I guess it’s just a career move for him, but I do think he’s pretty good.

Maybe some of our more medicaly astute folk have some info to add.

I will say regarding Dr. Steve Lamm, that 3 grams of L-Arginine is a fair amount, but some weight lifting supplements recommend that amount twice a day. So…

If you’re mean the fish oil, I wouldn’t see why not.

I’m going to give it a go. I like the way zane articulates things. She seems to have a practical approach and think it’s worth a try.
Okay…and I’m sure she’s still watching me with that weird mechanical eye.

I’ve got Weil’s Eight Weeks book laying around here someplace, maybe I’ll give it a read someday, after I rip the jacket off the book though, he looks like one of those health shop people.

This ODA, how do they come up with that? Is it suggested by body weight or ????
