Other members into traditionnal shaving ?

I didn’t think you could even buy that kind of razor and blades anymore. Anyways, the modern blades last so much longer and are so much safer.

Put ‘Double Edge Razor’ into youtube for lots of video, and the same into Google for websites. Here are a couple:

Modern blades may last longer, but with a proper traditional shave, there is significantly less irritation, razor burn, etc. Also, I think that buying a $1.59 pack of 10 DE blades will end up being cheaper than buying a $15 4-pack of refill cartridges for a Gillette Mach X over the life of those respective blades.

But most importantly, it’s pretty badass.

Not only are DE blades cheaper by orders of magnitude, you can sharpen them— can’t really do that with a disposable ;)

I shave with a straight razor and I love it, I’ll shave with a DE on day when I’m not broke. One way I avoid nicks, cuts, ingrown hairs and irritation is by shaving with cold water instead of hot, it works really well .Cold water makes your skin tighter and your razor wont dig into your skin as easy. The shave isn’t as close as a hot shave but I find hairs cut better when they are cold and stiff instead of hot and tender, less chance of them curling back and growing ingrown. That’s just how I do it though, many people shave with hot water/lather and get awesome results. I never got anything good from hot except two small scars of my cheek haha!

I learned DE many years ago from my Father. And have shaved with a straight in the past. While I think both are seriously cool disciplines for a guy to have I have been a disposable user for many years now. Simply a matter of convenience.

As much of a DE fan as I am, I do tend to use disposables on regular basis .. It is just easier and quicker.

The DE shaves tend to be special occasion.

I should be into DE shaving because I learnt it that way from my father. All the cool things like brushes, soap, creams and so on.
But the I moved out at 19 and found it waaaaayyys cooler to shave with the traditional razor knife.

Got me one and used it for some 10 years. Even for shaving my pubic area.
Incrediby stupid, I know, but I have real good motoric abilities it seems - never had an accident neither up- nor downstairs.

But then came the times with a lot of travels and airplane security has obviously a big aversion against open knives.
So I switched and discovered the marketing traps of the double, triple, quad-fold blades and got… trapped.
Fortunately I do not have to shav too much (one of the few advantages of being blonde) so it’s not too much money spent.

And I kept the old tools at home and use them if I feel like it, which is about once a month.
The feeling of shaving yourself in the very traditional style is like a little ceremony and focuesing on myself and my face.

Well, that’s basically all. And yes, I can recommend it if you have quiet hands!

I bumped into traditional shaving about two years ago. I didn’t think anything of it until about six months ago when I was reading a post on the internet about the history of shaving devices and shaving itself. I have seriously been thinking about giving it a try, but haven’t made my mind up as of yet. I would imagine I could find everything I need on the internet, but I worry I couldn’t afford to shave traditionally. I actually enjoy shaving and take inner pride about how I shave. I really believe that shaving with the cream and a straight blade or something of the sort would interesting.

Start with a DE, boomer, and if you like it, try a cut-throat. But I think you’ll stick with a DE, unless you want to buy several straight razors (expensive!) and have a ‘sharpening day’ once a week. :)

I got a shavette last weekend. It’s basically a traditional fold out straight razor but has a replaceable blade. All the cool factor of a straight, the close shave etc. And none of the honing and time spent maintaining an edge. I love how close the shave I get is. I’ve never had a closer shave. Replacement blades are dirt cheap and therefore my razor is always sharp. I think it’s the perfect compromise.

A good straight can last quite a bit of time before needing to be resharpened. I have a Dovo myself and it can last me between 4 - 6 month before it really needs to be resharpened. A good quality strop is key to maintaining a good edge over time. I have tried one of the disposable ones, but didm’t like it. They were too light to shave properly, no pressure is suppose to be used while wet shaving. A good brush and soap set is also very helpful. I currently use a Thiers Issard Pure Badger brush with Tabac shave soap. DE razors are also great to use and easier when in a rush, have a Thiers Issard DE I like also. Some good wet shaving sites for beginners are “Badger and Blade” and “Straight Razor Place”.

My Shavette is a Dovo as well. I’ve never used a plain straight before. Figured I would try the Shavette out first before spending the bucks on a strop etc. The straights are much more expensive as well. If I couldn’t get the hang of it of didn’t like it, I wasn’t out as much money. I do like it and found it dead simple to learn. Took about 2 seconds. Didn’t cut myself though there was a bit of razor burn as it’s a different feel. Much closer shave and I don’t think I’ll go back to a disposable again. Except when I’m at sea, I’m not chancing it when there’s a heaving deck beneath me.

I have 2 straight razors. One was my fathers and the other one was his dads. I have been too cautious to use them. I have had them for many years.

I also have an injector razor which was my mothers dads. It was purchased in the early 1940s. There is a lifetime certificate of warranty in the case with it. I started shaving with it back in the 50s. I no longer use it because I am unable to find the blades for it.

I have worn a full beard now for 21 years so I only shave my neck, and then only a couple of times a week.

I use a mug, soap, and a brush which I have had for many years. I much prefer the bar soap. The mug is one from Hardees labeled “Sunshine Biscuits. I do not know how long I have had that mug, but it is several decades.
