The big surprise wasn’t the actual measurements, the big surprise was how much smaller that these toys looked to me. I think the great point in I Want 8’s story is in being aware of how we stack up vs. the majority of dildos on the market. Obviously there’s no limit to how big a dildo can get - but if you check out an online store that is designed chiefly for women (like Good Vibrations) you’ll see that very few dildos that reach the size of the one L Born XXL picked out to share with his girlfriend.

The vast majority that I saw in my brief research were between 6-7” long by 1 3/8”-1 5/8” in diameter (sorry, their site didn’t post circumference).

With the exception of a Sean Michaels replica the biggest dildos this site carried were (for length) 8”x1 7/8 diameter and for girth 6 1/4” x 2 1/4” diameter. So, assuming that these largest ones are round (which they may not be) you’re looking at maximum possible circumferences of 5.7” and 7.1” respectively.

The point is that Men’s magazines, porn or the sleazy neighborhood sex shop will feature plenty of big dildos - but when it comes to what sizes the majority of women choose when left to their own devices - it seems they choose sizes that are (surprise!) pretty average - and, not surprisingly, smaller than we would have guessed.

Just another example of how the “average” guy tricks himself into thinking he is something less than average.

As far as the sizes go, a dildo has to be at least a few inches longer than an average penis. Otherwise, there would be no way for a woman to use it. You have to allow for the fact that you have to hold onto the thing.

Interesting response Phildo. I think a lot of us underestimate our own size. I was in a porn shop not too long ago and walked past the dildo section. All of the dildos looked impossibly huge to my eyes, even the 8 inch ones (and forget about the “mr. 10 inch” model, which gave me a complex).

I kept looking at the 8 inch one and asking myself how my own penis could only be an inch shorter than it, because it just didn’t seem possible. I went home and had to immediately go and measure my own again just to make sure it was still 7 inches.
